Align your degree to fintech roles
FIS prioritizes candidates whose degrees directly map to open positions in software engineering, data science, or financial systems. Review your O*NET occupation profile before applying to confirm your field of study supports the specialty occupation classification FIS typically uses for visa-sponsored roles.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Before signing an offer, verify FIS's enrollment status through E-Verify directly. Without confirmed enrollment, you can't file your STEM OPT extension, which cuts your authorized work period to 12 months instead of 36.
Target FIS's technology and platform divisions
FIS hires OPT students most actively in its core technology divisions, including payment systems, banking platforms, and enterprise software teams. Focusing your applications on these business units improves your chances of landing a role with a manager familiar with OPT authorization timelines and extension requirements.
Research FIS's H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
FIS regularly files H-1B petitions for employees transitioning off OPT. Use Migrate Mate to review FIS's H-1B filing history by job title and location, so you can evaluate whether the specific role and office you're targeting has a credible path to long-term sponsorship after your OPT period ends.
Prepare your OPT EAD timeline for recruiters
FIS recruiters often ask about authorization end dates early in the process. Know your EAD expiration and STEM OPT eligibility before your first call. Presenting a clear timeline, including when you'd need H-1B sponsorship, signals professionalism and reduces hesitation from hiring managers unfamiliar with OPT mechanics.
Negotiate your start date around DSO timelines
Your DSO must update your SEVIS record and issue a new I-20 before your OPT employment can begin. FIS's onboarding process moves quickly, so communicate your DSO's processing timeline to your recruiter early to avoid a gap between your offer letter date and your authorized start date.
FIS OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does FIS sponsor OPT visas?
FIS does not sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization issued by USCIS to F-1 students, not a visa that employers file for. What FIS does is hire students who already hold a valid OPT EAD, and the company is known for supporting employees through the subsequent H-1B sponsorship process.
Which roles at FIS typically support OPT students?
FIS most consistently hires OPT students into technology-focused roles, including software engineering, data analytics, cloud infrastructure, and financial systems development. Roles within FIS's banking technology and payment platform divisions tend to align well with the specialty occupation requirements needed for a smooth OPT-to-H-1B transition.
How do I confirm FIS will support my STEM OPT extension?
STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify and to sign a formal training plan using the I-983 form. Confirm FIS's E-Verify enrollment status before accepting an offer, and ask your recruiter or HR contact whether the team has handled STEM OPT extensions before to assess their familiarity with the process.
What is the typical timeline from OPT to H-1B at FIS?
The OPT-to-H-1B transition at FIS generally follows the standard USCIS H-1B cap cycle. FIS would need to file your H-1B petition during the registration window each spring for an October 1 start date. Use Migrate Mate to review FIS's historical H-1B filing patterns by role and location before committing to an offer.
How do I approach salary negotiations at FIS on OPT?
Your offer must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your specific role and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your job title before negotiating. FIS operates across many U.S. cities, so wages vary by office. Knowing the floor for your location prevents you from accepting below the required threshold.
How does FIS hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. FIS can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check FIS's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
