Verify your role qualifies as specialty occupation
Google's engineering and data roles almost always qualify, but product and program management titles can be ambiguous. Cross-reference your job description against O*NET to confirm the role requires a specific bachelor's degree before accepting an offer.
Confirm Google's E-Verify enrollment before starting
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Google has maintained active E-Verify enrollment for years, but confirm this with your recruiter before your initial 12-month OPT period ends to avoid a gap.
Target teams with established H-1B transition pipelines
Google's core engineering orgs, Google Cloud, and YouTube have the longest track records of sponsoring international employees through H-1B. Prioritizing these teams during your job search increases your odds of a supported visa transition after OPT.
Check prevailing wage alignment before negotiating salary
When Google later files your H-1B Labor Condition Application, your offered salary must meet DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer before negotiating so you're not underpaid at filing time.
Use Migrate Mate to research Google's H-1B filing history
OPT is your authorization, but Google's willingness to sponsor H-1B afterward is what determines your long-term path. Migrate Mate shows Google's H-1B filing history by job title and location, so you can identify which roles have the strongest sponsorship track record.
Submit your I-983 training plan early at Google
Google's HR and legal teams process high volumes of STEM OPT training plans. Submit your I-983 to your manager and the immigration team at least 60 days before your 12-month OPT expires to avoid delays your Designated School Official can't absorb.
Google OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Google sponsor OPT visas?
Google doesn't sponsor OPT itself. OPT is work authorization that USCIS grants directly to F-1 students. What Google does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extensions, Google qualifies because it's enrolled in E-Verify, which is the employer requirement USCIS sets for the 24-month extension.
Which roles at Google are most accessible for OPT students?
Software engineering, data science, machine learning, and UX research roles at Google are the most consistently accessible for OPT students. These positions map cleanly to specialty occupation requirements. Product management and operations roles can qualify too, but they require a tighter match between your degree field and the specific job description.
How do I navigate the OPT hiring process at Google?
Apply through Google's careers portal and disclose your OPT status during the offer stage when asked about work authorization. Google's in-house immigration team handles the STEM OPT training plan process. You'll work with a Designated School Official at your university to complete and submit the I-983 form before your initial 12-month period ends.
How do I know if Google will support my H-1B after OPT?
Google has a consistent history of sponsoring H-1B visas for strong performers on OPT, particularly in engineering and technical roles. The H-1B sponsorship decision is made by your team's leadership and Google's immigration department. Migrate Mate lets you filter Google's historical H-1B filings by job title so you can see which roles have been sponsored most reliably.
What timeline should I plan for STEM OPT at Google?
You can apply for the STEM OPT 24-month extension up to 90 days before your initial 12-month OPT period ends. Google's immigration team typically needs several weeks to complete the required I-983 training plan, so start that process at least 60 days before your expiration date to give your DSO enough time to update your I-20 and file with USCIS.
How does Google hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Google can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Google's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
