Target roles matching your degree field
Mary Washington Healthcare hires across clinical operations, health informatics, and administrative functions. Your OPT EAD is tied to your degree's SOC code, so apply only to roles where your field of study directly maps to the job description, or USCIS may question the employment relationship.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify on your start date. Ask your recruiter to confirm Mary Washington Healthcare's E-Verify participation during the offer stage, not after signing, so you don't lose extension eligibility on a technicality.
Time your application around OPT end dates
OPT authorization runs for 12 months, and the 60-day unemployment cap applies even during active job searching. Apply to Mary Washington Healthcare at least three months before your program end date so your EAD arrives before you need to start work.
Research prevailing wages for your target role
Before negotiating your offer, look up the wage level for your occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search. Mary Washington Healthcare must meet DOL prevailing wage standards if they later sponsor your H-1B, and starting below that threshold can complicate future filings.
Use Migrate Mate to verify H-1B sponsorship history
Mary Washington Healthcare's track record of H-1B filings tells you whether OPT employment is likely to convert to long-term sponsorship. Check Migrate Mate's employer profiles to see which departments and job titles have historically received H-1B petitions before committing to a role.
Prepare a training plan for STEM OPT compliance
If you qualify for the STEM OPT extension, your employer must complete a formal training plan on the I-983 form alongside your DSO. Start this conversation with your hiring manager at Mary Washington Healthcare during onboarding, not at the 12-month mark when your standard OPT expires.
Mary Washington Healthcare OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Mary Washington Healthcare sponsor OPT visas?
Mary Washington Healthcare doesn't sponsor OPT directly because OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students, not a visa employers petition for. What Mary Washington Healthcare does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. If you've received your EAD from USCIS, you're eligible to work there during your authorized OPT period.
Which departments at Mary Washington Healthcare typically hire OPT students?
OPT students at Mary Washington Healthcare most commonly find roles in health informatics, clinical operations, nursing, administrative services, and allied health functions. Roles that align with STEM-designated degree programs, such as health sciences or information technology, may also qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you additional time in those departments.
How do I approach the OPT-to-H-1B transition at Mary Washington Healthcare?
Start the conversation early. Mary Washington Healthcare has a history of sponsoring H-1B visas, so ask your manager about long-term sponsorship intent during your first performance review, not at the end of your OPT period. H-1B registration opens each March for an October start, so timing your request well before that window matters.
How do I find open OPT roles at Mary Washington Healthcare?
Search Mary Washington Healthcare's careers page and filter by your degree field and location. Cross-reference job titles against your O*NET occupation profile to confirm the role aligns with your SOC code before applying. Migrate Mate also surfaces employers with active H-1B filing histories by role, helping you identify which positions are more likely to lead to long-term sponsorship.
What should I do if my OPT ends before Mary Washington Healthcare completes hiring?
If your 12-month OPT period expires before you receive a job offer, you enter a 60-day grace period during which you can't work. USCIS doesn't extend this window, so if you're approaching the end of your OPT, prioritize roles with faster hiring cycles or explore whether a cap-gap provision applies if an H-1B petition is already pending.
How does Mary Washington Healthcare hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Mary Washington Healthcare can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Mary Washington Healthcare's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
