Verify your SOC code matches open roles
MedStar Health's clinical and administrative roles each carry a specific Standard Occupational Classification code. Cross-reference your degree field against the SOC code listed in any job posting using O*NET to confirm your OPT authorization aligns before you apply.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. MedStar Health, as a large hospital network, participates in E-Verify, but confirm this at the offer stage so you can file your STEM extension with USCIS without delays after your initial OPT period ends.
Target departments with recurring OPT hiring patterns
Health informatics, clinical research coordination, and biomedical engineering roles at MedStar Health consistently attract F-1 graduates. Applying to departments that already manage OPT students reduces onboarding friction and increases the likelihood that HR understands your authorization timeline and documentation requirements.
Use Migrate Mate to research MedStar's H-1B history
Before committing to an OPT role, check whether MedStar Health has an active H-1B filing track record in your occupation. Migrate Mate surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data by employer and role, so you can assess the realistic H-1B pathway before your OPT clock starts running.
Benchmark your salary against OFLC prevailing wages
MedStar Health must pay H-1B workers the prevailing wage for your role and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to find the Level I and Level II wage for your job title now, so your OPT offer salary is competitive enough to support a clean H-1B transition later.
Submit your I-983 training plan before your start date
For STEM OPT, you and MedStar Health must complete Form I-983 with a detailed training plan before your extension period begins. Work with your DSO at least 90 days before your OPT expiration to avoid any gap in authorization while USCIS processes your extension application.
MedStar Health OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does MedStar Health sponsor OPT visas?
MedStar Health doesn't sponsor OPT directly because OPT authorization comes from USCIS, not the employer. What MedStar Health does is hire F-1 students who already hold an OPT EAD, support STEM OPT extensions by participating in E-Verify, and in many cases sponsor H-1B visas for OPT employees after their work authorization period ends.
Which departments at MedStar Health typically hire OPT students?
Clinical research, health informatics, biomedical engineering, and healthcare administration are the departments at MedStar Health most likely to hire F-1 OPT graduates. These roles typically require a bachelor's or master's degree in a STEM-adjacent or health sciences field, and they align well with STEM OPT extension eligibility under USCIS guidelines.
How do I approach the offer process at MedStar Health as an OPT student?
Once you receive an offer, provide your EAD card and confirm your OPT end date with MedStar's HR team early. Ask explicitly whether your role qualifies for STEM OPT and whether MedStar Health is enrolled in E-Verify. Starting this conversation before you sign gives you time to complete Form I-983 and file your STEM extension well before your authorization expires.
What is the typical timeline from OPT to H-1B sponsorship at MedStar Health?
Most OPT-to-H-1B transitions at large healthcare employers like MedStar Health follow the federal H-1B cap timeline: you'd need to be sponsored in your first or second year of OPT so your petition can be filed in April for an October 1 start. Use Migrate Mate to check MedStar Health's H-1B filing history by occupation to understand how consistently they sponsor for your specific role type.
How do I find OPT-eligible roles at MedStar Health?
Filter your job search by degree field and confirm the role requires a bachelor's degree in a directly related specialty, which is the baseline for OPT eligibility. Review the job description's listed SOC code or cross-reference the role title against O*NET to verify the occupational match before applying to MedStar Health positions.
How does MedStar Health hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. MedStar Health can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check MedStar Health's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
