Align your degree to clinical or operational roles
Mercy hires OPT students across nursing informatics, health administration, supply chain, and clinical analytics. Map your degree field directly to job postings before applying. A misaligned major is the most common reason healthcare employers pass on OPT candidates at the screening stage.
Confirm Mercy's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Before signing an offer, verify Mercy's enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search. Large health systems typically maintain enrollment, but confirm it at the specific legal entity hiring you.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Mercy's H-1B filing history
OPT is your entry point, but the H-1B transition defines your long-term path. Migrate Mate surfaces Mercy's H-1B Labor Condition Application data by role and location, so you can see which departments have historically sponsored visa workers before accepting an OPT position.
Request your I-983 training plan early in onboarding
STEM OPT requires a signed Form I-983 training plan from your employer before USCIS approves the extension. Raise this with Mercy's HR team during onboarding, not after your initial OPT period ends. Late requests can leave you in a gap between your EAD expiration and extension approval.
Target roles with structured graduate development programs
Mercy runs residency and fellowship tracks in clinical and operational fields that rotate participants through departments. These programs give you documented training records that support your DSO's OPT reporting requirements and strengthen a future H-1B petition with clear specialty occupation evidence.
Research prevailing wages before negotiating your offer
Mercy's LCA filings for H-1B roles set wage benchmarks by occupation and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up prevailing wages for your job title in Mercy's operating markets. Knowing wage levels helps you negotiate a competitive offer and signals credibility to hiring managers.
Mercy OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Mercy sponsor OPT visas?
Mercy doesn't sponsor OPT itself. OPT is work authorization granted by USCIS directly to F-1 students. What Mercy does is hire candidates who already hold a valid OPT EAD. If you're authorized to work under OPT and your role qualifies, Mercy can employ you without filing any petition on your behalf.
Which departments at Mercy typically hire OPT students?
Mercy most commonly hires OPT students in clinical informatics, health information management, supply chain operations, revenue cycle, and hospital administration. These roles align with degrees in health administration, information systems, business, and clinical sciences. Engineering and data analytics roles within Mercy's technology division also see OPT hiring activity.
How do I start the OPT job search process at Mercy?
Start by searching Mercy's careers site for roles that match your degree field, then filter by location across its hospital markets in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Use Migrate Mate to see which Mercy entities have filed H-1B visa LCAs, which signals openness to visa-authorized workers. Apply directly and disclose your OPT status early in the process.
How do I get Mercy to support my STEM OPT extension?
Your DSO files the STEM OPT extension with USCIS, but Mercy must sign Form I-983 and be enrolled in E-Verify as a condition of approval. Confirm E-Verify enrollment at your hiring entity when you receive your offer. Initiate the I-983 conversation with your HR contact at least 90 days before your initial OPT period ends to avoid any authorization gap.
Does working at Mercy on OPT improve my H-1B chances?
It can, if you're in a role that qualifies as a specialty occupation. Mercy has a documented history of sponsoring H-1B visas for clinical and administrative professionals. Building your tenure in a role tied to your degree field strengthens the specialty occupation argument for an H-1B petition. Confirming Mercy's filing history by department before accepting an offer is a practical first step.
How does Mercy hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Mercy can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Mercy's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
