Align Your Degree to Qualifying Roles
MyMichigan Health's OPT hires are concentrated in roles where your degree field directly maps to the job title. Pull up O*NET to confirm your SOC code matches the position before applying, misaligned credentials are the most common reason healthcare OPT candidates get filtered out early.
Confirm E-Verify Enrollment Before Accepting STEM OPT
Your 24-month STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Verify MyMichigan Health's enrollment status through E-Verify before you accept an offer, because once your standard 12-month OPT expires, only a confirmed E-Verify employer can support the extension without a gap.
Target Health Informatics and Clinical Technology Teams
STEM OPT-eligible graduates in health informatics, biomedical engineering, and medical technology have stronger footing at MyMichigan Health than non-STEM candidates. These departments have recurring project needs that align with F-1 graduation timelines, giving you a natural entry point that non-STEM tracks can't access.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Verified OPT Openings
Search Migrate Mate to filter MyMichigan Health job listings by OPT eligibility and role type. The platform surfaces positions where the employer's visa history supports F-1 hiring, saving you from applying to roles that route exclusively through H-1B or Green Card sponsorship pipelines.
Address the H-1B Transition Timeline in Your Interview
Healthcare employers evaluate OPT candidates partly on long-term sponsorship fit. Bring up the H-1B cap timeline proactively, your OPT end date, USCIS registration windows, and how your role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Candidates who demonstrate this awareness are easier for HR teams to advocate for internally.
Benchmark Your Salary Against OFLC Wage Search Data
Before negotiating your offer, look up the prevailing wage for your role and Michigan location using the OFLC Wage Search. Accepting below the Level I or II prevailing wage can complicate a future H-1B Labor Condition Application, so entering at the right tier protects both your current earnings and your sponsorship path.
MyMichigan Health OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does MyMichigan Health sponsor OPT visas?
MyMichigan Health doesn't sponsor OPT directly, USCIS grants OPT work authorization to F-1 students, not employers. What MyMichigan Health does is hire students who already hold an active OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extensions, the health system's E-Verify enrollment is what makes the 24-month extension possible, so confirming that status before accepting an offer is essential.
Which departments at MyMichigan Health typically hire OPT students?
OPT hires at MyMichigan Health tend to cluster in clinical support, health informatics, medical laboratory technology, and administrative operations. STEM-designated roles in biomedical or health informatics are particularly accessible for F-1 graduates because those positions support both the initial 12-month OPT period and the STEM extension.
How do I start the OPT hiring process at MyMichigan Health?
Apply directly through MyMichigan Health's careers portal with your OPT EAD in hand or with your EAD application already filed with USCIS. During the offer stage, provide your I-20, EAD card, and OPT approval notice. HR will verify your authorization through E-Verify as part of the standard onboarding process rather than filing any separate petition.
How do I find open OPT roles at MyMichigan Health?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by visa type, so you can search specifically for MyMichigan Health positions open to OPT candidates without wading through postings that require H-1B sponsorship upfront. Cross-reference those results with MyMichigan Health's own careers page to catch any listings posted directly that haven't yet appeared on aggregator platforms.
Does MyMichigan Health sponsor H-1B after OPT ends?
MyMichigan Health has sponsored H-1B visas, and OPT employees who perform well are among the candidates employers advocate for during the annual USCIS registration window. The H-1B cap lottery runs each spring for an October 1 start date, so your OPT end date needs to provide enough runway to attempt at least one registration cycle before your authorization lapses.
How does MyMichigan Health hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. MyMichigan Health can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check MyMichigan Health's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
