Target roles matching your degree field
NYSOMH evaluates OPT candidates based on degree relevance to the posted role. Review the job description carefully and confirm your field of study directly supports the position, since mismatches can delay onboarding or complicate your STEM OPT extension eligibility later.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm NYSOMH's E-Verify status before signing any offer. State agencies typically maintain enrollment, but verifying directly with HR avoids a situation where your 24-month extension gets blocked at activation.
Use Migrate Mate to find NYSOMH OPT openings
Filtering public sector healthcare employers with OPT-compatible postings takes time manually. Migrate Mate surfaces NYSOMH roles verified against visa-type compatibility, so you can focus on applying to positions where your OPT authorization is already a recognized fit for the hiring team.
Document clinical hours for STEM OPT eligibility
Healthcare roles at NYSOMH often qualify for STEM OPT if your degree is in a STEM-designated field like public health informatics or health data analytics. Start tracking supervised hours and degree-to-role alignment from day one, since your DSO needs this documentation when filing your extension.
Ask HR about H-1B sponsorship during offer negotiations
NYSOMH has a history of sponsoring H-1B visas for employees already in clinical and administrative roles. Raise the H-1B transition timeline directly during the offer stage so you know whether the agency can file a petition before your OPT authorization expires, including any cap-gap period.
Research prevailing wage tiers for your role
Before your interview, use the OFLC Wage Search to look up prevailing wages for your target occupation in the New York region. State government employers like NYSOMH follow structured pay grades, and knowing the wage tiers helps you negotiate appropriately and spot roles built for sponsored positions.
New York State Office of Mental Health OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does New York State Office of Mental Health sponsor OPT visas?
NYSOMH doesn't sponsor OPT directly, since OPT is a USCIS benefit granted to F-1 students, not an employer-filed petition. What NYSOMH does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD, making it an OPT-compatible employer. For STEM OPT extensions, NYSOMH must be enrolled in E-Verify, which state agencies typically maintain.
Which roles and departments at NYSOMH typically hire OPT students?
OPT students at NYSOMH most commonly land in clinical support, public health data, program evaluation, and administrative operations roles. Behavioral health, health informatics, and research departments tend to be the most active in bringing on early-career candidates, particularly those with degrees in psychology, public health, social work, or health data analytics.
How do I start the process of getting hired at NYSOMH on OPT?
Apply through NYSOMH's official job portal and clearly indicate your OPT authorization status in your application. Bring your EAD and I-20 to any interview stage where employment eligibility is discussed. Migrate Mate can help you identify current NYSOMH openings that align with your field of study and OPT timeline before you apply.
How do I know if my NYSOMH role qualifies for a STEM OPT extension?
Your degree must be in a STEM-designated field, and your role must directly use skills from that degree. Cross-reference your job title against your degree classification using O*NET and confirm with your DSO before your initial OPT period ends. NYSOMH HR can provide documentation confirming E-Verify enrollment, which USCIS requires to approve the extension.
Does NYSOMH transition OPT employees to H-1B sponsorship?
NYSOMH has sponsored H-1B visas for employees already in qualifying roles, particularly in clinical and specialized administrative positions. The transition isn't automatic, so raise the topic with HR early in your employment. The H-1B annual cap lottery runs in April, meaning timing your start date and petition filing requires planning well in advance of your OPT expiration.
How does New York State Office of Mental Health hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. New York State Office of Mental Health can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check New York State Office of Mental Health's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
