Target Northwell's Research and Informatics Teams
Northwell's Feinstein Institutes and health informatics divisions regularly bring on OPT students for data analytics, clinical research coordination, and biomedical roles. Apply to these units directly, as they operate on project cycles that align well with OPT authorization windows.
Verify Your Role Qualifies for STEM OPT
Not every Northwell role qualifies for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Check your job offer's SOC code against the STEM Designated Degree Program List on USCIS before accepting. A mismatch means your OPT ends at 12 months, cutting your pathway to H-1B sponsorship short.
Confirm Northwell Is Enrolled in E-Verify
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Northwell Health, as a large healthcare system subject to federal contracting requirements, maintains E-Verify enrollment. Still, confirm this with HR before your STEM OPT extension is filed, since enrollment must be active at the time of approval.
Search Northwell's LCA Filing History Before Applying
Migrate Mate lets you filter Northwell Health's DOL Labor Condition Application filings by role and location, so you can see which job titles they've historically supported through to H-1B. Start there to identify which departments are the strongest targets before submitting your application.
Prepare Your Credentials for Healthcare Licensing Early
Clinical OPT roles at Northwell often require state licensure or board eligibility alongside your EAD. Begin New York State credential verification through the Office of the Professions before your OPT start date, since processing delays can affect your hire date independently of your visa timeline.
Negotiate Your Start Date Around OPT Processing Time
USCIS currently takes several months to process OPT EAD applications, and Northwell's onboarding timelines are fixed. Submit your OPT application to your DSO no later than 90 days before your intended start date to avoid a gap between your program end date and your authorized employment window.
Northwell Health OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Northwell Health sponsor OPT visas?
Northwell Health doesn't sponsor OPT directly, USCIS grants OPT authorization to F-1 students, not employers. What Northwell does is hire students who already hold a valid OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extensions, Northwell's E-Verify enrollment satisfies the employer-side requirement, making it eligible to support your 24-month extension.
Which departments at Northwell Health typically hire OPT students?
OPT students at Northwell most commonly land roles in health informatics, clinical research at the Feinstein Institutes, nursing and allied health, and administrative operations. Data analytics and biomedical engineering roles also appear regularly. Departments tied to federally funded research tend to have the most structured onboarding processes for OPT hires.
How do I confirm my Northwell role qualifies for a STEM OPT extension?
Cross-reference the SOC code listed in your offer letter against the STEM Designated Degree Program List published by USCIS. Your degree field must appear on that list, and your role must directly apply that field. Northwell's HR team can confirm the SOC code assigned to your position before you accept.
How do I find which Northwell Health roles have led to H-1B sponsorship?
Migrate Mate surfaces Northwell Health's DOL Labor Condition Application filing history by job title and work location. This shows you which roles Northwell has actively supported through to H-1B visa, giving you a clearer picture of where a long-term sponsorship pathway actually exists before you apply.
What timeline should I plan for between my OPT start and a potential H-1B filing at Northwell?
H-1B cap-subject petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start. If your OPT begins after April of a given year, your earliest H-1B start is October 1 of the following year. Plan your OPT window to overlap with at least one H-1B registration cycle, and discuss the timeline with Northwell HR well before the March registration window opens.
How does Northwell Health hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Northwell Health can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Northwell Health's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
