About Sun River Health
Sun River Health has a rich history of providing quality, affordable health care to communities in need. Founded in the early 1970s by four African American women in Peekskill, New York, the organization was established to address the lack of accessible health services in their community. With the help of a small federal grant, the first Sun River Health site opened its doors in 1975. Over the years, Sun River Health has grown into a comprehensive Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) system with over 45 locations, serving more than 250,000 patients across the Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island. Our exceptional primary care practitioners, specialists and support staff are dedicated to delivering high-quality care to all individuals, regardless of their ability to pay. In December 2018, Sun River Health expanded its reach by merging with Brightpoint Health, an FQHC network offering integrated medical, behavioral and social support services in New York City. This merger allowed us to enhance our services and continue our mission under the unified name of Sun River Health.

Align your degree field to FQHC roles
Sun River Health operates as a federally qualified health center, so OPT authorization tied to degrees in public health, health administration, or clinical sciences maps directly to their open roles. Confirm your degree field matches the SOC code on your job offer before accepting.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before STEM extension
If your degree qualifies for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, confirm Sun River Health is enrolled in E-Verify before your standard OPT expires. USCIS requires employer E-Verify participation as a condition of the extension, and healthcare networks sometimes use subsidiary employer entities.
Target clinical support and health services departments
Sun River Health's hiring at community health centers tends to concentrate in patient services, care coordination, and health informatics. Position your application toward those departments rather than administrative back-office roles, which are less likely to involve structured OPT-to-H-1B transition pathways.
Search Migrate Mate for verified Sun River Health openings
Filter Sun River Health listings on Migrate Mate to surface roles that align with your OPT work authorization and field of study. The platform pulls employer hiring data so you can identify which departments are actively recruiting F-1 students before you spend time on a cold application.
Request a clear H-1B sponsorship commitment early
OPT authorization is time-limited, so ask during the offer stage whether Sun River Health has a policy for sponsoring H-1B after OPT. Community health center employers often have HR teams that handle this regularly, but getting written confirmation before your start date removes ambiguity later.
Prepare your training plan for the STEM extension filing
The STEM OPT extension requires a formal training plan signed by a supervising employee with relevant credentials. At Sun River Health, identify your direct supervisor's title and credentials early, since USCIS will review whether the training plan reflects genuine skill development in your degree field.
Sun River Health OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Sun River Health sponsor OPT visas?
Sun River Health hires F-1 students who already hold OPT work authorization. USCIS grants OPT directly to eligible F-1 students, so Sun River Health doesn't petition for OPT itself. What it does is employ OPT holders in qualifying roles and, for STEM-eligible positions, support the 24-month STEM OPT extension by maintaining E-Verify enrollment.
Which departments at Sun River Health typically hire OPT students?
OPT students at Sun River Health are most commonly placed in clinical support, care coordination, health informatics, and community health roles. These positions align with degrees in public health, health services administration, and clinical sciences. Administrative and corporate roles are less frequently open to OPT candidates without a direct field-of-study match.
How do I apply for OPT roles at Sun River Health?
Start by confirming your EAD is active and that your degree field aligns with the role's SOC code. Apply directly through Sun River Health's careers page or search current openings on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles by visa type and employer. During interviews, confirm E-Verify enrollment if you're planning to use the STEM OPT extension.
What is the typical timeline for getting hired on OPT at Sun River Health?
Healthcare hiring at federally qualified health centers like Sun River Health generally takes four to eight weeks from application to offer, though clinical roles with credentialing requirements can take longer. Apply at least three months before your OPT start date to give yourself enough runway for background checks and onboarding before your EAD is active.
Does Sun River Health sponsor H-1B visas after OPT ends?
Sun River Health sponsors H-1B visas, including for employees who started on OPT. The transition requires your employer to file an H-1B petition during the annual USCIS registration window each March. Confirm H-1B sponsorship intent during the offer stage and document it in writing, since the OPT-to-H-1B timeline is tight and leaves little room for late employer decisions.
How does Sun River Health hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Sun River Health can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Sun River Health's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
