Align your degree to specialty occupation roles
The Guthrie Clinic's clinical and research teams require degrees that map directly to job functions. Use O*NET to confirm your occupation's typical education level before applying, so your OPT EAD aligns with roles the clinic classifies as specialty positions.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm The Guthrie Clinic's active E-Verify participation through HR before your start date, since missing this step disqualifies you from the extension regardless of your degree field.
Target departments with active H-1B filing history
Focus your applications on clinical informatics, pharmacy, physical therapy, and research coordination roles at The Guthrie Clinic. These departments show consistent H-1B sponsorship patterns, which signals institutional familiarity with transitioning OPT employees into long-term visa status after your authorized period ends.
Submit your I-983 training plan before your start date
For STEM OPT roles at The Guthrie Clinic, your DSO must receive a signed I-983 training plan from your supervisor before your extension begins. Healthcare employers often route this through compliance or HR, so request the form early to avoid authorization gaps.
Use Migrate Mate to confirm The Guthrie Clinic's sponsorship history
Before applying, check The Guthrie Clinic's DOL Labor Condition Application filing history on Migrate Mate. You can filter by job title and location to see which roles the clinic has historically sponsored, giving you a sharper target list than a broad job board search.
Request a prevailing wage benchmark before negotiating salary
Look up your role's prevailing wage on the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation. The Guthrie Clinic must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage if it later sponsors your H-1B, so knowing that floor helps you negotiate a salary that supports a clean future filing.
The Guthrie Clinic OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does The Guthrie Clinic sponsor OPT visas?
The Guthrie Clinic doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students. What The Guthrie Clinic does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extensions, you'll need to confirm the clinic is enrolled in E-Verify, which is the one employer-side requirement that applies.
Which departments at The Guthrie Clinic typically hire OPT students?
Clinical research, health informatics, pharmacy, physical therapy, and administrative operations are the departments at The Guthrie Clinic where OPT students most commonly land roles. These functions align with degree fields that satisfy specialty occupation requirements and have shown consistent H-1B sponsorship activity, making them strong targets for F-1 graduates planning a long-term transition.
How do I confirm The Guthrie Clinic supports the OPT-to-H-1B transition?
Check The Guthrie Clinic's Labor Condition Application filing history through Migrate Mate to see which roles and locations the clinic has sponsored for H-1B. A department that has filed LCAs repeatedly is far more likely to have an established process for transitioning OPT employees than one with no prior sponsorship record.
What is the timeline for transitioning from OPT to H-1B at The Guthrie Clinic?
USCIS opens H-1B registration each March for an October 1 start date. If you're on standard OPT, plan to raise the H-1B conversation with The Guthrie Clinic's HR team at least six months before your EAD expires. STEM OPT's 24-month extension gives you more runway, but registration timing is fixed regardless of your authorization end date.
How do I approach The Guthrie Clinic about H-1B sponsorship after being hired on OPT?
Raise the H-1B topic during onboarding or your first performance review, not after a job offer is signed. Ask HR whether the clinic has a standard process for transitioning OPT employees and which internal team manages immigration filings. Framing it as a retention planning question rather than a request tends to get a more concrete response from healthcare employers.
How does The Guthrie Clinic hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. The Guthrie Clinic can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check The Guthrie Clinic's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
