Target clinical and research departments directly
Jefferson Health's largest OPT hiring happens in clinical research, health informatics, and biomedical sciences. Applying through the main careers portal won't surface all open roles, contact department recruiters in research institutes and academic medical centers separately to find OPT-friendly hiring managers.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify before your extension starts. Confirm Jefferson Health's enrollment status with HR before your initial OPT period ends, since large health systems sometimes have uneven E-Verify participation across subsidiaries and affiliate entities.
Align your credentials with specialty occupation standards
Jefferson recruits heavily in roles that map to specialty occupation definitions under USCIS, which matters if you're planning an OPT-to-H-1B transition. Use O*NET to confirm your job title's typical education and training level matches your degree field before submitting your application.
Use Migrate Mate to check Jefferson's H-1B filing history
Jefferson's pattern of H-1B sponsorship signals which roles it's most likely to support long-term for OPT hires. Migrate Mate surfaces Jefferson's DOL Labor Condition Application data by job title, so you can see which departments have converted OPT employees to H-1B sponsorship in prior years.
Negotiate your start date around OPT authorization timing
USCIS can take up to 90 days to process an OPT EAD, and Jefferson Health's onboarding timelines for clinical roles are often rigid. Request your OPT authorization well before your program end date and negotiate a conditional start date in writing so your offer isn't rescinded during processing delays.
Benchmark your salary offer against prevailing wage data
Jefferson's compensation for OPT hires in health informatics and research roles varies by department. Before accepting, cross-reference your offered salary against the OFLC Wage Search for your specific occupation code and Philadelphia metro area to confirm it's competitive and supports a future H-1B prevailing wage requirement.
Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health sponsor OPT visas?
Jefferson Health doesn't sponsor OPT directly, OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students, not a visa employers petition for. What Jefferson does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extensions, Jefferson must be enrolled in E-Verify, which allows eligible employees to extend their work authorization by 24 months.
Which roles and departments at Jefferson Health typically hire OPT students?
Jefferson Health most consistently hires OPT students in clinical research coordination, health informatics, biomedical engineering, and data analytics. Its academic medical centers and research institutes tend to be more OPT-accessible than direct patient care units, where state licensure requirements can limit eligibility for new graduates on OPT.
How do I navigate the OPT hiring process at Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health?
Start by applying through Jefferson's careers portal and flagging your OPT status clearly in your application. Before an offer is finalized, confirm with HR that your specific hiring entity is enrolled in E-Verify if you're on a STEM degree. Migrate Mate can help you identify which Jefferson departments have a track record of supporting the transition from OPT to H-1B visa sponsorship.
How do I time my OPT application to align with Jefferson Health's hiring timelines?
USCIS recommends submitting your OPT EAD application up to 90 days before your program end date. Jefferson Health's clinical and research onboarding cycles often have fixed start dates, so apply for OPT authorization as early as USCIS allows. Coordinate your DSO's I-20 recommendation timeline with Jefferson's expected offer and background check process to avoid gaps.
Does Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health support the OPT-to-H-1B transition?
Jefferson Health has a documented history of sponsoring H-1B visas for employees in specialty occupation roles, particularly in research, health informatics, and clinical administration. Whether a specific position qualifies depends on the role's degree requirements and the department's sponsorship policy. Review Jefferson's LCA filing history by occupation to assess your role's likelihood before accepting an offer.
How does Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
