Target roles matching your degree field
UMass Memorial Health evaluates OPT hires against your F-1 authorized field of study. Before applying, confirm your degree classification aligns with the posted role's requirements. A mismatch between your I-20 field and the job description can create compliance issues for both you and the employer.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Your 24-month STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. UMass Memorial Health, as a large healthcare system, typically maintains E-Verify compliance, but verify this directly during the offer stage so your extension eligibility isn't at risk after onboarding.
Prepare your EAD documentation before your start date
UMass Memorial Health's HR team completes I-9 verification on or before day one. Have your EAD card ready to present alongside your passport. Delays in document submission can push back your official start date, which shortens your available OPT work window.
Use Migrate Mate to identify H-1B filing history
If your goal is OPT-to-H-1B transition at UMass Memorial Health, use Migrate Mate to review the health system's H-1B Labor Condition Application filing history by role and department. That data shows which specialties have historically received sponsorship, helping you target the right teams from the start.
Align your OPT end date with H-1B cap deadlines
H-1B cap-subject petitions are filed each April for an October 1 start. Work backward from your OPT or STEM OPT expiration date to ensure you have enough authorized work time to remain employed at UMass Memorial Health through the cap-gap period if selected in the lottery.
Research prevailing wage expectations before negotiating
UMass Memorial Health must pay H-1B employees at or above the DOL prevailing wage for the role. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up wage levels for your target job title in the Worcester or Boston metro area before salary discussions, so your expectations align with what USCIS will scrutinize.
UMass Memorial Health OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does UMass Memorial Health sponsor OPT visas?
UMass Memorial Health doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT is authorized by USCIS and tied to your F-1 status, not your employer. What UMass Memorial Health does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extensions, the health system's E-Verify enrollment is what makes the 24-month extension possible.
Which departments at UMass Memorial Health hire OPT students?
Clinical operations, medical research, health informatics, and administrative functions are the areas where OPT students most commonly land roles at UMass Memorial Health. Research-affiliated positions tied to UMass Chan Medical School can be a strong entry point, particularly for students in biomedical, public health, or data-related degree programs.
How do I apply for OPT jobs at UMass Memorial Health?
Apply through UMass Memorial Health's careers portal and indicate your OPT work authorization status in your application. Attach your EAD card details and I-20 when requested. Migrate Mate can help you identify which UMass Memorial Health roles have historically led to H-1B sponsorship, so you can prioritize applications strategically from the outset.
How do I time my OPT job search at UMass Memorial Health for H-1B transition?
Start your OPT job search at least three to four months before your program end date. Factor in that H-1B cap petitions are filed each April for an October start. To remain continuously authorized, you need enough OPT or STEM OPT time remaining to bridge through the cap-gap period without a gap in employment.
Does UMass Memorial Health sponsor H-1B visas for OPT employees?
UMass Memorial Health has an active history of H-1B sponsorship, particularly in clinical and research roles. Sponsorship decisions are made at the department and role level, not as a blanket policy. Demonstrating strong performance during your OPT period and working in a specialty-shortage area within the health system strengthens the case for H-1B sponsorship.
How does UMass Memorial Health hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. UMass Memorial Health can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check UMass Memorial Health's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
