Align your credentials to UofL Health's clinical needs
UofL Health prioritizes candidates whose licensure and degree field directly match the posted role. Before applying, confirm your OPT EAD covers the occupation category listed, and ensure any state-required clinical licenses are active or pending verification in Kentucky.
Target departments with recurring OPT hires
Health informatics, nursing, respiratory therapy, and laboratory science teams at UofL Health regularly bring on OPT students. Focus your search on these units rather than applying broadly, since hiring managers in clinical departments are more familiar with OPT authorization timelines and onboarding requirements.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Ask UofL Health's HR team to confirm active E-Verify participation before you sign your offer letter, so your 24-month STEM extension remains an option when your initial 12-month OPT period ends.
Use Migrate Mate to find UofL Health's H-1B filing history
Knowing which roles UofL Health has historically filed H-1B petitions for helps you target positions most likely to offer long-term sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data by employer, so you can see which job titles have sponsored before and plan your application accordingly.
Negotiate your start date around OPT EAD timing
Your OPT EAD must be in hand before you begin work at UofL Health. USCIS recommends filing at least 90 days before your program end date, but processing can run several months. Discuss your anticipated EAD receipt date with the hiring manager early so the offer isn't jeopardized by delays.
Research prevailing wage benchmarks before salary talks
When UofL Health eventually files an H-1B petition for you, your salary must meet DOL prevailing wage levels for the Louisville metro area. Look up your occupation's wage tier using the OFLC Wage Search or O*NET before your offer negotiation so you're starting from an informed position.
UofL Health OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does UofL Health sponsor OPT visas?
UofL Health hires F-1 students who already hold an OPT EAD issued by USCIS. The company does not petition for OPT directly, since OPT authorization comes from USCIS to the student. What UofL Health does do is accept OPT as valid work authorization and, for eligible roles, support the eventual H-1B transition.
Which roles and departments at UofL Health typically hire OPT students?
Clinical and technical departments tend to be the most active. Nursing, respiratory therapy, laboratory science, health informatics, and medical imaging are areas where UofL Health regularly brings on OPT employees. Administrative and research roles at the academic medical center level also see OPT hires, particularly in data analytics and clinical research coordination.
How do I confirm UofL Health is enrolled in E-Verify before accepting an offer?
Ask UofL Health's HR or talent acquisition team directly whether the specific business unit making your offer is enrolled in E-Verify. Enrollment must be active for you to qualify for the STEM OPT 24-month extension. You can also search the E-Verify employer database yourself using the employer's legal name to verify participation independently.
How do I find OPT-eligible jobs at UofL Health?
Search UofL Health's careers portal and filter by department or job category relevant to your degree field. Migrate Mate also lists UofL Health roles with employer-level sponsorship data, helping you identify which positions have a history of H-1B filings so you can prioritize applications to roles most likely to support long-term status.
Does UofL Health support the OPT-to-H-1B transition for its employees?
UofL Health has a documented pattern of filing H-1B petitions for employees in clinical and technical roles, making it a reasonable path for OPT students seeking longer-term work authorization. The transition requires separate employer action through USCIS, and timing around the annual H-1B cap and lottery matters. Starting the conversation with HR at least a year before your OPT expires gives you the most lead time.
How does UofL Health hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. UofL Health can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check UofL Health's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
