At Lyft, our purpose is to serve and connect. We aim to achieve this by cultivating a work environment where all team members belong and have the opportunity to thrive.
Our mission depends on having a digital representation of the physical world - a map with all routing related (real-time) information. This is what makes Lyft different from many products: our products don’t just facilitate online interactions, they facilitate dynamic, real-world ones. Without mapping services, none of these real world interactions between people and transport can happen.
The Mapping organization at Lyft has spent the last few years building up Lyft’s mapping assets and capabilities by combining many internal and external data sources and services into an increasingly powerful and mission-critical technology stack. In doing so, we’ve also enabled new user experiences and features across all of Lyft’s products, including rideshare industry leading firsts like CarPlay, Android Auto, and real-time driver feedback!
Lyft’s engineering team is growing rapidly, and we are looking for engineering managers to help us scale. Our engineers are smart, flexible, and love solving difficult challenges. They look to their managers for organizational transparency, career development, mentorship, and honest feedback. They move fast and ship code to production continuously, relying on their leadership to increase productivity by removing obstacles and keeping processes lean. Our engineering managers are people with varying technical backgrounds and interests -- some are involved in the technical details of their team and others provide general technical direction and oversight. As managers, our job is to keep teams efficient and executing on the right goals. We build teams that are inclusive, helpful, and have a strong sense of ownership for the things they build.
Responsibilities:
- Set the technical vision and strategy for a rapidly evolving product area
- Co-own the product strategy with the product partner and ensure a timely delivery with high quality of the engineering solutions
- Lead a team of talented engineers who like to ship code and tackle hard engineering problems
- Mentor and guide the professional and technical development of your team members. Help develop their careers and assign them to projects tailored to their skill levels, personalities, work styles, and professional goals
- Build teams that are collaborative, inclusive, and respectful of each other
- Provide continuous feedback, address performance, and recognize the individual strengths and contributions of your team members
- Create plans for prioritizing technical and resourcing challenges in your organization
- Maintain a balance between building sustainable, high-impact projects and shipping things quickly
- Instill a spirit of continuous improvement in the team’s code, architecture, and processes
- Work closely with the Lyft recruiting team to hire high potential candidates from diverse backgrounds
- Work with your engineers and/or product managers to maintain a prioritized backlog and create short term and long-term goals
- Own your team’s deliverables and ensure we continue to ship scalable, highly-available products that delight our passengers and drivers
Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering
- 3+ years of experience managing engineering teams
- Experience architecting, building, and scaling distributed systems
- Experience both launching consumer facing products and also leading backend and ML-focused teams
- You have experience leading a team of engineers and guiding them through their career development
- You enjoy working in a collaborative environment, and you’re committed to driving projects to completion creatively
- You can motivate and instill a strong sense of ownership in your team
- You have experience guiding teams through planning, prioritization, and execution of work
- You are able to thrive in a heavily cross-functional environment and drive projects to completion regardless of the organizational structure
- You work well with product and science partners and help set the product vision for an ambiguous project
- Very strong written and verbal communications and presentation skills and aptitude to engage directly and effectively with company executives
Benefits:
- Great medical, dental, and vision insurance options with additional programs available when enrolled
- Mental health benefits
- Family building benefits
- Child care and pet benefits
- 401(k) plan with company match to help save for your future
- In addition to 12 observed holidays, salaried team members have discretionary paid time off, hourly team members have 15 days paid time off
- 18 weeks of paid parental leave. Biological, adoptive, and foster parents are all eligible
- Subsidized commuter benefits
- Monthly Lyft credits and complimentary Lyft Pink membership

Align your resume to Lyft's stack
Lyft engineering job postings frequently reference Python, Go, distributed systems, and Kubernetes. Tailor your resume to mirror the exact technologies listed, since applicant tracking systems filter before a recruiter sees your profile.
Target roles below the staff level first
Mid-level and senior individual contributor roles at Lyft generate the most consistent sponsorship activity. Staff and principal positions often require internal context that's harder to demonstrate as an external candidate on a visa timeline.
Get your degree equivalency documented early
H-1B specialty occupation requires a directly related bachelor's degree or higher. If your degree is from outside the U.S. or is a three-year program, get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved service before your offer stage, not after.
Clarify sponsorship scope during the offer conversation
Some employers sponsor H-1B transfers but not new H-1B cap filings. Ask your Lyft recruiter directly whether they file for cap-subject petitions, since the answer affects whether you need to wait for an April lottery or can start sooner.
Track Lyft's LCA filings on the DOL disclosure database
The Department of Labor's OFLC disclosure data shows certified Labor Condition Applications by employer, role title, and worksite. Searching Lyft's filings tells you which engineering titles they've sponsored and the prevailing wage levels attached to each.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Lyft engineering roles by visa type
Visa eligibility varies by role, team, and seniority even within the same company. Migrate Mate lets you filter open Lyft engineering positions by the specific visa category you hold, so you're applying to roles where your status is already a match.

Find Engineering at Lyft JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Lyft sponsor H-1B visas for Engineers?
Yes, Lyft sponsors H-1B visas for engineering roles. This includes both cap-subject petitions for new H-1B holders and H-1B transfers for candidates already holding the visa with another employer. Sponsorship is most common for software engineering and data engineering positions. Confirm the scope of sponsorship with your recruiter during the offer process, since it can vary by team and seniority level.
How do I apply for Engineering jobs at Lyft?
Applications go through Lyft's careers site, where engineering roles are listed by team and location. Filtering by department narrows results to software, data, infrastructure, and platform engineering. You can also browse open Lyft engineering roles filtered by visa type on Migrate Mate, which surfaces positions where sponsorship is actively offered so you're not applying blind on immigration fit.
Which visa types does Lyft sponsor for Engineering roles?
Lyft sponsors several visa categories for engineering hires, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian nationals, TN for Canadian and Mexican citizens, and F-1 OPT and CPT for students in their academic program. For longer-term pathways, Lyft also supports Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 and EB-3 PERM-based petitions for qualifying engineering employees.
What qualifications does Lyft expect for sponsored Engineering roles?
Most Lyft engineering roles require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related field. This matters beyond the job description because H-1B specialty occupation requires the degree to directly relate to the role. Lyft's engineering teams work across distributed systems, mobile, data pipelines, and infrastructure, so hands-on experience in those areas strengthens both your application and your visa petition.
How do visa timelines affect the Engineering hiring process at Lyft?
If you need a cap-subject H-1B, USCIS registration opens each March for an October 1 start date, meaning offers finalized outside that window require planning around the next cycle. Candidates on F-1 OPT can start sooner if their authorization period covers the role's start date. E-3 and TN petitions have no annual cap and can be filed year-round, giving those candidates more scheduling flexibility during the Lyft offer process.
