Tailor your bar admission to MoFo markets
Morrison Foerster's Legal Counsel roles are concentrated in California, New York, and D.C. Admission to the bar in one of those jurisdictions, or active pursuit of admission, meaningfully strengthens your candidacy before you apply.
Surface your practice group fit early
MoFo structures Legal Counsel hiring around specific groups like tech transactions, life sciences, or regulatory. Framing your application around a named practice area, not just general legal skills, signals the fit that triggers sponsorship conversations.
Request sponsorship confirmation before the offer stage
Large law firms sometimes treat sponsorship as a recruiting decision rather than policy. Raising it with the recruiting team after a first-round interview, but before an offer, avoids wasted time and aligns expectations before USCIS filing timelines become a constraint.
Use Migrate Mate to identify active Legal Counsel openings
Migrate Mate filters Legal Counsel roles at firms like Morrison Foerster by visa sponsorship type, so you can target live openings that match your H-1B, TN, or OPT status without sorting through positions that won't support sponsorship.
Understand how OPT cap-gap affects law firm start dates
If your F-1 OPT expires before an H-1B October 1 start date, the cap-gap rule extends your work authorization automatically. Morrison Foerster's legal HR team is familiar with this, but you'll need to confirm your I-20 reflects the cap-gap extension.
Prepare a PERM-ready employment history before your interview
If you're targeting a Green Card through an EB-2 or EB-3 path, law firms with in-house immigration counsel often initiate PERM early for senior roles. Having clean, documented employment history and degree credentials ready shortens the labor certification process significantly.

Find Legal Counsel at Morrison Foerster JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Morrison Foerster sponsor H-1B visas for Legal Counsels?
Yes, Morrison Foerster sponsors H-1B visas for Legal Counsel roles, though sponsorship decisions are made on a case-by-case basis depending on the practice group and seniority level. The firm has established immigration processes and works with immigration counsel to support H-1B filings, including cap-subject petitions subject to the annual lottery and October 1 start date.
Which visa types are commonly used for Legal Counsel roles at Morrison Foerster?
H-1B is the most common path for international Legal Counsel candidates, covering specialty occupation roles that require a law degree and bar admission. F-1 OPT and CPT are available for law graduates still in their post-completion authorization window. Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying legal roles may use TN status. J-1 is occasionally used for structured exchange arrangements.
What qualifications and experience does Morrison Foerster expect for Legal Counsel roles?
Most Legal Counsel openings at Morrison Foerster require a J.D. from an accredited law school, active bar admission in the relevant jurisdiction, and several years of practice experience, typically in a BigLaw or in-house setting. Practice group alignment matters significantly. Candidates with transactional, regulatory, or litigation backgrounds that match an active MoFo practice area are prioritized over generalists.
How do I apply for Legal Counsel jobs at Morrison Foerster?
You can apply through Morrison Foerster's careers portal or through Migrate Mate, which aggregates Legal Counsel openings at sponsoring firms and lets you filter by visa type. When applying, address your practice group fit directly in your cover materials. Lateral hiring at MoFo often moves through recruiting coordinators, so confirming visa sponsorship availability early in the process saves time on both sides.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship for a Legal Counsel role at Morrison Foerster?
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start date, which means your offer and USCIS registration need to be in place by late March. If you're on OPT, cap-gap protection can bridge the gap. For roles starting outside the cap cycle, cap-exempt filings are not available through a law firm unless it qualifies as a nonprofit or government entity, which Morrison Foerster does not.
