INTRODUCTION
Every day, tens of millions of people come to Roblox to explore, create, play, learn, and connect with friends in 3D immersive digital experiences– all created by our global community of developers and creators. At Roblox, we’re building the tools and platform that empower our community to bring any experience that they can imagine to life. Our vision is to reimagine the way people come together, from anywhere in the world, and on any device. We’re on a mission to connect a billion people with optimism and civility, and looking for amazing talent to help us get there. A career at Roblox means you’ll be working to shape the future of human interaction, solving unique technical challenges at scale, and helping to create safer, more civil shared experiences for everyone.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Principal Software Engineer on the Fleet Management team, you will lead the systems that provision and rebuild Roblox's global fleet across bare metal and cloud. This team owns provisioning, and MAPI, the global Machine API that turns raw capacity into production-ready infrastructure in minutes, across hundreds of thousands of machines on-prem and cloud environments, including new GPU and new AI infrastructure. You will shape the technical direction for this critical compute platform and unify diverse hardware and environment-specific workflows behind MAPI and drive large-scale maintenance operations like firmware updates and hardware tuning.
You Will
- Lead the Machine Bootstrap pod in building and evolving provisioning and fleet management at massive scale.
- Architect and extend MAPI, the unified Machine API that abstracts bare-metal, GPU hosts, and cloud instances behind a single global interface.
- Ship fleet-wide maintenance operations (BIOS updates, firmware updates, configuration changes) to hundreds of thousands of machines through MAPI.
- Drive best-in-class provisioning performance, minutes to fully rebuild a machine from scratch.
- Evaluate and integrate new hardware platforms including GPU servers and AI accelerators into the provisioning pipeline.
- Collaborate across Compute, Networking, and Cloud teams on the full machine lifecycle from rack-and-stack to production.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 8+ years of experience with strong expertise in distributed systems and infrastructure.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent field.
- Strong proficiency in Go, C/C++, Rust or other system level programming languages.
- Experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems that other engineering teams depend on.
- Familiarity with bare-metal concepts (PXE/iPXE, DHCP, BMC/IPMI/Redfish, OS imaging) is a plus; deep low-level systems experience is a bonus, not a requirement.
- Interest in modern server hardware including GPU servers, AI accelerators, and cloud infrastructure.
- A track record of building high-performance automation at fleet scale and reducing toil through developer-friendly APIs.
COMPENSATION
For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding DevOps Jobs at Roblox Jobs
Align your credentials with cloud-native infrastructure
Roblox runs large-scale distributed systems on cloud platforms. Before applying, make sure your resume reflects hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, or CI/CD pipelines rather than generic IT operations work.
Time your OPT application before the interview stage
If you're on F-1 status, USCIS recommends filing your OPT EAD at least 90 days before your program end date. Having authorization in hand removes uncertainty during Roblox's offer and onboarding timeline.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open DevOps roles at Roblox
Sponsorship-confirmed DevOps listings at Roblox are searchable by visa type on Migrate Mate, so you can target roles that match your specific authorization status rather than applying blind and asking about sponsorship later.
Prepare for infrastructure-at-scale interview questions
Roblox's DevOps interviews typically probe incident response, observability tooling, and platform scalability. Concrete examples from high-traffic or high-availability environments will carry more weight than certification credentials alone.

Does Roblox sponsor H-1B visas for DevOps roles?
Yes, Roblox sponsors H-1B visas for DevOps engineers. They have a consistent record of filing H-1B petitions for infrastructure and platform roles, and they also support H-1B transfers for candidates already holding H-1B status with another employer, which can streamline your start date.
How do I apply for DevOps jobs at Roblox?
You can browse and apply for DevOps roles at Roblox through Migrate Mate, which filters listings by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm eligibility before applying. Roblox's recruiting process for DevOps typically includes a technical screen, a system design round focused on large-scale infrastructure, and a final loop with the platform or site reliability team.
Which visa types does Roblox sponsor for DevOps positions?
Roblox sponsors several visa categories for DevOps hires, including H-1B, H-1B1, E-3, TN, F-1 OPT, and Green Card pathways such as EB-2 and EB-3. Australian and Canadian nationals have access to E-3 and TN status respectively, both of which avoid the H-1B lottery and can be processed faster.
What qualifications does Roblox expect for sponsored DevOps roles?
Roblox's DevOps roles generally require a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field, which also satisfies the specialty occupation threshold USCIS requires for H-1B eligibility. Beyond credentials, practical experience with cloud infrastructure, container orchestration, and deployment automation is consistently prioritized in their job listings.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take when joining Roblox?
Timeline depends on visa type. TN and E-3 petitions can be approved within a few weeks. Standard H-1B processing with USCIS currently runs several months, while premium processing reduces that to 15 business days. For F-1 OPT holders, your EAD must already be approved before your start date, so coordinate filing with USCIS well in advance of any offer deadline.
