Match your credentials to USMCA professions
HHSC hires for roles like registered nurses, social workers, and medical technologists, all listed on the USMCA professions list. Cross-reference your credential against that list before applying, because TN admission is denied at the border if your job title doesn't match precisely.
Target state agency postings with licensure requirements
HHSC job postings that require a Texas state license or a nationally recognized credential signal TN-eligible roles. Filter your search by licensing requirements, those positions align most directly with USMCA-defined professions and are where HHSC routinely extends TN offer letters.
Request a detailed offer letter covering all TN requirements
HHSC's offer letter must specify your job title using USMCA profession language, your work location, employment duration, and that the position requires professional-level qualifications. A vague or internally formatted letter causes delays at the port of entry, so ask HR to confirm all elements are included.
Verify your wage against OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
TN doesn't require a formal prevailing wage certification, but HHSC's public-sector pay bands are set by Texas classification schedules. Pull the OFLC Wage Search for your occupation and region so you can confirm the offer reflects market rates and holds up if a CBP officer asks about compensation.
Use Migrate Mate to identify HHSC's active TN-eligible openings
Search Migrate Mate to see which HHSC roles have active TN hiring history and which departments are currently posting. That data helps you prioritize applications to the teams most likely to issue TN offer letters rather than cold-applying across the entire agency.
Prepare for TN renewal before your admission period ends
TN status at HHSC is granted for up to three years and can be renewed indefinitely. Because HHSC operates on state budget cycles, confirm your position is funded beyond your current admission period before renewal, and initiate the offer letter process at least 60 days before your I-94 expires.
Texas Health and Human Services Commission TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Texas Health and Human Services Commission sponsor TN visas?
Yes. HHSC hires Canadian and Mexican nationals in USMCA-eligible professions and issues the offer letters required for TN admission. As a state agency, HHSC doesn't file a petition with USCIS, you present the offer letter and supporting credentials at a U.S. port of entry or consulate to obtain TN status directly.
Which roles at HHSC typically qualify for TN admission?
HHSC most commonly supports TN admission for registered nurses, licensed social workers, medical technologists, and certain management consultants within its healthcare and human services programs. The role must appear on the USMCA professions list and require a qualifying degree or credential. Clinical and program-specialist positions in the agency's Medicaid and behavioral health divisions are frequent matches.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a job offer from HHSC?
Once HHSC extends a written offer, ask HR to provide a TN support letter that includes your job title in USMCA-compliant language, work location, start date, and a statement that the role requires professional-level qualifications. Canadians present this at a land border or airport port of entry. Mexican nationals schedule a visa appointment at a U.S. consulate. USCIS is not involved in either path.
How long does TN admission take when entering through a U.S. port of entry?
Canadian nationals applying at a land border or pre-clearance airport can receive TN admission the same day if documentation is complete. Mexican nationals must obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate first, which adds consular appointment wait time. Most applicants should allow two to six weeks for the full process, depending on consulate scheduling and document preparation.
How do I find open TN-eligible positions at HHSC?
Search Migrate Mate to identify HHSC roles with TN hiring history and see which departments are currently active. You can also search HHSC's state job portal directly and filter by degree-required positions in healthcare and human services. Cross-check any role you're targeting against the USMCA professions list and O*NET to confirm it qualifies before applying.
How does TN visa admission work at Texas Health and Human Services Commission?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Texas Health and Human Services Commission, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
