Verify your role appears on the USMCA list
TN admission is only available for occupations explicitly listed under USMCA. Before applying to any UPMC role, confirm your job title and duties map cleanly to a recognized TN category. Cross-reference the official occupation description using O*NET to strengthen your credentials match.
Target UPMC departments with recurring TN hires
UPMC's clinical and research divisions regularly bring on TN professionals in physical therapy, medical technology, and scientific roles. Filter your job search by department and look for postings that list USMCA visa types as accepted. Roles tied to direct patient care or lab operations tend to qualify most cleanly.
Request a detailed offer letter before your border appointment
At the border or consulate, the offer letter UPMC provides is your primary document. Ask HR to specify your exact job title, duties, required degree, and employment start date. Vague or generic letters are a leading cause of TN admission delays, especially for allied health roles with broad duty descriptions.
Use Migrate Mate to identify UPMC's active TN-eligible postings
Searching for TN-eligible roles manually across a large health system like UPMC is slow. Migrate Mate filters open positions by visa type and employer, so you can focus only on roles where UPMC has actively supported TN admission, saving time during your job search.
Align your credential documentation to USMCA standards
Canadian and Mexican professionals must show that their degree and job duties satisfy the USMCA definition for their occupation category. For healthcare roles at UPMC, gather your original transcripts, licensure certificates, and any credentialing board letters before you approach HR about TN support.
Confirm UPMC's state licensure expectations before your admission date
Pennsylvania requires active licensure for most clinical TN professions before you begin work. Coordinate your state license application timeline with UPMC's HR team early, since TN admission doesn't grant a grace period for unlicensed practice in regulated healthcare roles.
UPMC TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does UPMC sponsor TN visas?
UPMC supports TN admission for qualified Canadian and Mexican professionals by issuing the offer letters required at the border or U.S. consulate. Because TN is treaty-based under USMCA rather than a petition process, UPMC doesn't file paperwork with USCIS on your behalf. You present UPMC's offer letter and your credentials directly at your port of entry or consulate appointment.
Which roles at UPMC typically qualify for TN admission?
UPMC's clinical and research operations align well with the USMCA professions list. Roles in physical therapy, medical technology, nursing, clinical laboratory science, and certain scientific or management consulting functions are among the occupations that most commonly qualify. Your specific job title and documented duties must match a recognized USMCA occupation category, not just the department you'd be joining.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a UPMC job offer?
Once UPMC extends a formal offer, work with their HR or international hiring team to obtain a support letter that details your job title, duties, required qualifications, and start date. Canadian nationals then present this letter at a land border or preclearance airport. Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate. USCIS is not involved in either pathway.
How long does TN admission take for UPMC roles?
Canadian nationals crossing at a land border or preclearance airport can typically receive TN admission the same day, provided documentation is complete. Mexican nationals applying at a U.S. consulate face longer appointment wait times that vary by post. Delays at UPMC most often stem from incomplete offer letters or missing licensure documents, not the TN process itself.
How do I find TN-eligible job openings at UPMC?
Migrate Mate is built to surface employer postings filtered by visa type, making it faster to locate UPMC roles where TN admission has been supported. You can also search UPMC's careers portal directly and filter by location or department. Prioritize postings that explicitly list USMCA visa types or confirm international candidates are welcome, then verify your occupation qualifies under the USMCA professions list before applying.
How does TN visa admission work at UPMC?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from UPMC, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
