Get Access To All JobsClinical Informatics Analyst CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Clinical Informatics Analyst role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your degree program includes health informatics, biomedical informatics, data science, or a related field, and the role involves duties your DSO can tie directly to your curriculum. Clinical Informatics Analyst positions typically involve EHR optimization, clinical data analysis, and workflow design, which align closely with coursework in those disciplines. Your DSO makes the final determination, not the employer.
Can I do CPT at a small clinic or healthcare startup instead of a large hospital?
You can, but smaller organizations carry more risk for F-1 students. They may not be E-Verify enrolled, may lack HR processes for I-9 completion under CPT, or may not understand the distinction between CPT and OPT. Verify E-Verify status through the USCIS database before accepting any offer from a non-hospital employer.
What happens if my CPT job description changes after authorization?
If your actual duties shift materially from what your DSO authorized, your CPT may no longer be valid for those tasks. Notify your DSO immediately if your role expands, for example from data reporting to system implementation or clinical decision support design. A revised job description may require a new CPT authorization and an updated I-20.
How do I find Clinical Informatics Analyst employers who already sponsor F-1 students?
Migrate Mate filters Clinical Informatics Analyst roles by employers with documented F-1 and visa sponsorship history, so you're not guessing which organizations are willing to work with CPT students. Health systems and academic medical centers in major metros tend to have established processes for F-1 hiring, which reduces administrative friction on your end.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Yes. If you use 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose OPT eligibility entirely after graduation. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not count against OPT regardless of duration. Many Clinical Informatics Analyst positions are offered as part-time CPT specifically to preserve post-graduation OPT options, so clarify the hours structure before authorizing.
