The Genetic Counselor is responsible for direct patient care and patient care coordination for Medical Genetics patients. Duties include taking family histories, teaching genetic concepts, explaining risks and benefits of various diagnostic procedures, facilitating a decision-making process for clients, documenting sessions in letters to referring care providers, calling lab results, and providing supportive, nondirective counseling. Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Provides genetic counseling to patients.
- Utilizes genetic counseling process to provide patient care that recognizes and responds to individual needs; provides current information; and adheres to NSGC guidelines, code of ethics and department protocols.
- Provides counseling in a complete, comprehensive, and non-directive manner.
Planning and Coordination of Care
- Collects data and assists in the preparation of clinical case plans for patients scheduled for genetic counseling.
- Prepares three generation pedigrees; anticipates needs and obtains information for case management, such as medical records.
- Conducts literature search as appropriate.
- Coordinates care with appropriate departments (e.g. Ultrasound and Lab).
Communication and Documentation
- Provides written and/or verbal communications so that patients and referring care providers have the information to meet their needs.
- Provides results of normal tests to families within 24 hours and notifies primary care providers of abnormal results within 24 hours.
- Maintains communications with families through decision making and resolution.
- Writes consultation letters within 48 hours after meeting with patients.
- Reviews intake forms and documents all verbal communication and correspondence.
Participation in Community and Professional Education
- Acts as a resource to both hospital and community; develops goals for professional development.
- Remains active in professional organizations; provides staff education as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in genetic counseling
SKILLS
- Keyboard skills and ability to navigate electronic systems applicable to job functions
LICENSURE
- Genetic Counselor License required
- ABMG/ABGC certified or board eligible
PAY RANGE
USD $41.04 - USD $61.16 /Hr.

Does a counselor role qualify for CPT?
A counselor position qualifies for CPT if your degree program requires the practical experience as part of your curriculum, such as supervised clinical hours for a counseling or social work degree. Your DSO determines eligibility based on how the role connects to your coursework, not the job title alone. Unpaid practicum placements and paid internships can both qualify if your program documentation supports it.
Can I do CPT at a private therapy practice instead of a clinic or agency?
Yes, private practices can serve as CPT sites if your program approves them as qualifying training locations. The employer doesn't need to be a nonprofit or institution, but the supervision structure must meet your program's standards. Many counseling programs require a licensed supervisor on site, so confirm the practice has a licensed counselor or psychologist who can provide documented oversight before your DSO authorizes the placement.
How do I find counselor employers who understand CPT authorization?

Community mental health centers, university counseling centers, and behavioral health nonprofits regularly hire CPT students because they're structured around supervised training models. Avoid employers who conflate CPT with H-1B visa sponsorship, as they'll often stall the hiring process waiting for a petition that CPT doesn't require.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. If you use full-time CPT for 12 months or more, you lose eligibility for OPT after graduation, including the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't affect OPT regardless of duration. If you're in a multi-semester counseling practicum that's structured as full-time, track your cumulative full-time CPT months carefully with your DSO before each new authorization.
What happens if my counseling placement ends before my authorized CPT end date?
You must stop working immediately if your placement ends early, even if your CPT authorization extends further. Working at a different site without a new DSO authorization for that specific employer is a status violation. Contact your DSO as soon as the placement ends to update your records. If you're joining a new employer, the authorization process starts fresh, including a new I-20 with the correct employer name and dates.
