Does CPT work authorization cover clinical dietitian rotations at hospitals?
Yes, clinical dietitian rotations at hospitals qualify for CPT as long as the work is an integral part of your degree curriculum and your DSO authorizes it before you begin. Your offer letter must specify duties tied to medical nutrition therapy or clinical nutrition practice, and your school program must have a formal affiliation or course requirement connecting to the rotation.
Can I do CPT at a private outpatient nutrition practice or telehealth company?
CPT is employer-agnostic, so private practices and telehealth employers qualify as long as your DSO approves the position and the duties align with your coursework. The practical challenge is that smaller employers are less likely to be E-Verify enrolled and may be unfamiliar with I-9 requirements for F-1 students, so confirm compliance readiness before accepting an offer.
How do I find dietitian employers who are open to CPT students?
Migrate Mate surfaces dietitian roles filtered by employers with documented visa sponsorship history, which is a strong proxy for CPT familiarity. Health system networks, VA facilities, and university-affiliated medical centers are consistently the most CPT-accessible settings because they have established international student onboarding processes and HR teams that understand F-1 work authorization requirements.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS rules. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count against OPT regardless of duration. If your dietetic internship or clinical rotation requires full-time hours, track cumulative CPT days carefully with your DSO to protect your post-graduation OPT eligibility.
What job duties must my offer letter include for CPT authorization as a dietitian?
Your DSO needs to see duties that map directly to your nutrition or dietetics curriculum, such as conducting nutrition assessments, developing medical nutrition therapy plans, providing patient counseling, or managing clinical foodservice operations. Generic titles like 'nutrition assistant' without specifics are often insufficient. Request a duty-specific offer letter from your employer and review it with your DSO before submitting your CPT application to your school.
