Get Access To All JobsBehavioral Health Tech CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a behavioral health tech job qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role is an integral part of your curriculum and your school's DSO approves it. Behavioral health tech work typically qualifies for students enrolled in psychology, social work, counseling, or human services programs. The job duties must directly reinforce coursework you're currently taking or have completed as part of your degree plan.
Can I work full-time as a behavioral health tech on CPT?
You can, but full-time CPT carries a significant consequence: 12 or more months of full-time CPT use eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't affect OPT regardless of duration. Most students in behavioral health programs structure CPT as part-time to preserve their post-graduation work options.
How do I find behavioral health tech employers who accept CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for behavioral health tech roles and filter for employers with prior work authorization history. Facilities that have hired F-1 students before understand the DSO authorization process and are less likely to rescind offers due to paperwork confusion. Avoid employers who ask you to start before your updated I-20 is issued.
What documents does my employer need to verify my CPT authorization?
Your employer needs your valid F-1 visa stamp, your current I-20 with CPT authorization printed on page two naming the specific employer and dates, and your I-94 arrival record. The employer completes Form I-9 using these documents. If the facility uses E-Verify, they'll submit your I-9 information electronically to confirm your authorization status.
Does CPT experience as a behavioral health tech help with future H-1B sponsorship?
It strengthens your profile if you're applying to H-1B visa roles in behavioral health or clinical settings. Employers familiar with your work during CPT are more likely to initiate H-1B sponsorship than a new employer who hasn't seen your skills. Check via O*NET whether your specific behavioral health tech duties map to a specialty occupation classification, which is required for H-1B eligibility.
