Get Access To All JobsCertified Surgical Technologist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does CPT work as a Certified Surgical Technologist count toward NBSTSA eligibility?
Yes, in most cases. The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting requires documented surgical case experience, and CPT rotations at accredited clinical sites typically qualify. Confirm with your program director that your placement site's case logs meet the procedural requirements before you start, and keep copies of all hours records your DSO receives.
Can I do part-time CPT while completing surgical technology coursework?
Part-time CPT is permitted and keeps your full OPT eligibility intact, since only full-time CPT used for 12 months or more reduces your OPT availability. Most surgical technology programs structure clinical rotations as part-time to preserve that post-graduation flexibility. Your DSO authorizes part-time or full-time status on each updated I-20, so the designation must match your actual scheduled hours at the site.
What happens if my CPT placement ends before my clinical rotation hours are complete?
Your CPT authorization is tied to the specific employer listed on your I-20. If that placement ends early, your work authorization at that site ends immediately. You'll need your DSO to authorize a new CPT placement at a different site before you can resume working. Start that process as soon as you know the original placement is ending to avoid any gap.
How do I find surgical technologist employers who already understand F-1 CPT?
Search Migrate Mate for Certified Surgical Technologist roles filtered by CPT eligibility. Employers familiar with F-1 CPT authorization are less likely to stall your start date with HR questions about your work status. Hospital systems that run formal student externship programs or partner with surgical technology schools are typically the most prepared to onboard CPT students quickly.
Does my CPT surgical technologist role need to be in the same specialty as my coursework?
Your DSO determines whether the placement is an integral part of your curriculum, so the clinical setting should align with your program's learning objectives. A general surgical technologist rotation at a multi-specialty OR is typically approvable for most surgical technology curricula. Highly specialized placements, such as cardiac or neurosurgery-only sites, may require your program coordinator to document the educational justification before your DSO will authorize the I-20 update.
