Does Advanced Practice Provider clinical training qualify for CPT?
Yes, as long as your clinical placement is listed as a required component of your degree program and your DSO approves it before you start. APP programs in nursing, physician assistant studies, and nurse midwifery typically qualify because clinical rotations are integral to the curriculum, not elective experiences. Your school's catalog or program handbook should document this requirement explicitly.
Can I work at multiple clinical sites simultaneously on CPT?
Each site requires its own separate CPT authorization on your I-20. Your DSO must list each employer individually, with accurate start and end dates for each rotation. If your APP program assigns you to overlapping rotations at different practices, you'll need updated CPT documentation for every site before your first day at each location.
How do I find APP employers experienced with F-1 CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to identify clinical employers who have hired F-1 students in Advanced Practice Provider roles before. Sites familiar with CPT already have affiliation agreements and HR processes in place, which significantly reduces the administrative back-and-forth that delays rotations at practices encountering F-1 students for the first time.
Does my CPT employment need to be paid to be valid?
No, CPT can be unpaid. The core requirement is that the training is an integral part of your established curriculum and is approved by your DSO. Many APP clinical rotations are structured as unpaid placements, particularly in the first year of a program. Check with your DSO whether your program's policy requires compensation for CPT to count toward degree completion.
What happens to my CPT status if my rotation site changes mid-semester?
You must stop working at the original site immediately and get your DSO to issue a new I-20 with updated CPT authorization reflecting the new employer before starting at the replacement site. Working at a clinical location not listed on your I-20 is an unauthorized employment violation, even if your program coordinator arranged the switch and the training content is identical.
