Does a Radiology Practitioner Assistant role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the clinical work is a required or elective component of your radiology or health sciences program and your school treats it as integral to your curriculum. Your DSO evaluates this based on your program requirements and the employer's job description. Roles limited to administrative or clerical tasks won't qualify, but hands-on fluoroscopic or procedural assistant work typically does.
Can I work at an outpatient imaging center on CPT, or only at hospitals?
CPT authorization is determined by your school, not the facility type, so outpatient imaging centers, freestanding radiology groups, and hospital-based departments all qualify as long as the work maps to your curriculum. The practical difference is that smaller outpatient centers are less likely to have a standardized process for onboarding CPT students, so expect to spend more time walking HR through the authorization requirements.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the supervising radiologist changes?
Your CPT authorization is tied to the employer and the role, not the individual supervisor. If your supervising radiologist changes but your duties and employer remain the same, your existing CPT authorization generally stays valid. You should notify your DSO of the change in writing, and if your state's RPA supervision law requires the supervisor to be named in a licensure agreement, you may need updated documentation from the employer.
How do I find Radiology Practitioner Assistant employers that are open to CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers in medical imaging and radiology who have a history of hiring international candidates in clinical roles. Facilities with prior work authorization filings are more likely to have HR teams familiar with CPT paperwork. You can also contact your program's clinical education coordinator, since many radiology programs maintain a pre-vetted list of CPT-approved clinical sites.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Yes. Using 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your eligibility for OPT entirely, including the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not affect OPT eligibility regardless of how long it runs. If you're planning to rely on OPT after graduation, confirm your total full-time CPT usage with your DSO before accepting a full-time Radiology Practitioner Assistant position.
