Position Details
- Starting base salary: $300,000
- Sign-on bonus
- Minimum shift requirement for Pediatric Hospitalist work is 121 24-hour shifts per year

Does a physician CPT role require a separate work permit from USCIS?
No separate USCIS filing is required. CPT authorization comes entirely from your DSO, who updates your I-20 to reflect the approved employer, dates, and training location. Your updated I-20 is your work authorization document. You must not begin any clinical duties before your DSO issues that updated I-20, even if the employer has already credentialed you.
Can I do CPT at a private medical practice instead of a hospital?
It's possible but much harder to authorize. Your school must confirm the private practice placement meets the integral curriculum requirement, which typically means a supervising physician who holds a faculty appointment at your institution. Many DSOs will not approve placements at practices with no formal academic affiliation, so confirm your school's policy before pursuing this path.
How do I find physician employers who understand CPT requirements?

Academic medical centers, VA hospitals, and Federally Qualified Health Centers regularly work with F-1 students on CPT and have HR staff who understand co-authorization paperwork, employer-of-record obligations, and the requirement that training align with your enrolled curriculum.
Does full-time physician CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not count against OPT. If you're considering a full-time clinical rotation that extends beyond 12 months, plan your post-graduation work authorization strategy with your DSO before accepting the placement.
What does an employer need to provide for my CPT authorization?
Your DSO will typically require a formal offer letter specifying your role title, supervision structure, training location, hours per week, and exact start and end dates. Some schools also require a training agreement or affiliation agreement signed by both the employer and your program director. Collect all documents before submitting your CPT request, since incomplete packages delay DSO processing.
