Get Access To All JobsEmergency Medicine Nurse Practitioner CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Emergency Medicine Nurse Practitioner role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your NP program includes clinical practicum requirements and the emergency medicine rotation is listed as part of your curriculum. Your DSO must confirm the position is an integral part of your degree program, not elective or supplemental work. The hospital must also be willing to sign any affiliation agreement your school requires before CPT authorization is granted.
Can I work full-time CPT in an emergency department as an F-1 student?
Full-time CPT is permitted but reduces your OPT eligibility. One year or more of full-time CPT use eliminates your post-completion OPT entirely. Most F-1 NP students in emergency medicine programs structure rotations as part-time CPT where possible, especially if they plan to pursue H-1B visa sponsorship after graduation. Confirm your program's CPT classification with your DSO before accepting a full-time schedule.
How do I find emergency medicine NP employers who accept CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to identify health systems with documented work-authorization filing history in emergency medicine NP roles. Beyond the platform, academic medical centers and Level I and II trauma centers affiliated with your university are strong targets because they already have established F-1 student affiliation agreements and credentialing pathways in place.
What documents does a hospital HR department need to process my CPT authorization?
Hospital HR typically needs your updated I-20 showing the CPT authorization, your F-1 visa stamp, your I-94 admission record, and your current NP license for the state. Some health systems also require a copy of your school's affiliation agreement and a letter from your DSO confirming the role is curriculum-integrated. Request your updated I-20 first, since HR can't open a file without it.
Can my CPT emergency medicine NP position lead to H-1B sponsorship after graduation?
A CPT rotation does not obligate the employer to sponsor you for H-1B, but it significantly improves your chances by giving the department direct clinical experience with you. Emergency medicine NP roles qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards since they require a master's-level NP degree. Raise the sponsorship question with the department medical director, not just HR, before your rotation ends.
