CPT Licensed Professional Counselor Jobs
Licensed Professional Counselor roles require state licensure, supervised clinical hours, and a direct tie between your CPT work and your counseling or psychology program. Your DSO must authorize CPT before you start, and the placement must align with your degree plan, not just your interests.

Get Access To All JobsLicensed Professional Counselor CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Licensed Professional Counselor CPT role need to match my exact degree program?
Yes. Your DSO must certify that the LPC role is an integral part of your curriculum, meaning your degree program must specifically require or offer academic credit for the clinical placement. A counseling psychology or clinical mental health counseling program typically satisfies this, but a general psychology degree may not. Confirm the curricular tie with your academic advisor and DSO before accepting an offer.
Can I do CPT at a private therapy practice instead of an agency or hospital?
Yes, private practices can qualify for CPT, but two conditions must be met. Your supervisor must hold a state-recognized credential that counts toward your LPC supervision requirements, and the placement must be formally documented in your curriculum or approved by your department. Many private practices are unfamiliar with I-20 CPT authorization requirements, so bring a clear explanation from your DSO to your first conversation with them.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my employer changes my role or hours mid-placement?
Any material change to your CPT placement, including a shift from part-time to full-time hours, a change in job duties, or a new supervisor location, requires a new I-20 endorsement from your DSO. Working under changed conditions without an updated I-20 can put your F-1 status at risk. Notify your DSO immediately if your employer adjusts the terms of your placement.
How do I find LPC employers who understand F-1 CPT paperwork?
Employers in community mental health, university counseling, and hospital systems tend to have more experience with international student placements than private practices. Migrate Mate lets you search Licensed Professional Counselor roles and filter by employers with prior work-authorization filing history, which is a practical signal that their HR teams are familiar with I-20 requirements and authorization documentation.
Does full-time CPT during my LPC internship affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. USCIS rules state that 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Full-time is generally defined as 20 or more hours per week. If your LPC program requires a year-long full-time clinical internship, talk to your DSO about whether part-time authorization across multiple semesters is structurally possible within your program requirements.
