CPT Mental Health Therapy Jobs
Mental health therapy CPT roles let F-1 students earn supervised clinical hours that most licensure boards require before you can sit for credentialing exams. Your DSO must authorize each placement individually, and the work must tie directly to your counseling, social work, or psychology curriculum, not just your degree program in general.

Get Access To All JobsMental Health Therapy CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does mental health therapy work qualify as CPT for F-1 students?
Yes, if your program curriculum explicitly requires supervised clinical practice and the placement site provides that experience under a licensed supervisor. Practica, internships, and externships embedded in counseling, social work, or psychology programs are the most common qualifying formats. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how your program catalog describes the requirement.
Can I do CPT at a private therapy practice, or does it have to be a clinic or hospital?
Private practices can qualify for CPT as long as the placement meets your program's curricular requirement and your DSO approves it. The key is whether a licensed supervisor can document your hours in the format your program and any future licensure board require. Solo practices without a clear supervision structure are sometimes harder to authorize than group practices or clinics.
How do I find mental health therapy employers who understand F-1 CPT authorization?
Migrate Mate lets you filter mental health therapy roles by employers who have prior experience hiring international students. This matters because mental health settings vary widely in HR sophistication, and an employer familiar with CPT authorization will know what paperwork they need to provide to your DSO rather than asking you to explain it from scratch.
Does CPT in a mental health therapy role affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so tracking your authorized CPT hours is critical. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, does not affect OPT. If your clinical program requires a full-time internship semester, confirm with your DSO how that counts toward the 12-month threshold before you accept the placement.
What documents does a mental health therapy employer need to authorize my CPT?
Most DSOs require a written offer or placement letter on employer letterhead stating the job title, supervisor's name and license number, start and end dates, and whether the position is part-time or full-time. Some programs also require a training or supervision agreement. Collect these before your DSO appointment, because missing the supervisor's license information is the most common reason CPT authorization gets delayed in clinical placements.
