CPT Medical Assistant Jobs
Medical Assistant roles qualify for CPT when your program explicitly includes clinical or healthcare administration fieldwork in the curriculum. Your DSO must authorize each position before you start, and the work must tie directly to your degree plan. Hands-on patient intake, vital signs, and EHR documentation all count as integral academic experience.

Get Access To All JobsMedical Assistant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Medical Assistant job qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your degree program includes a required clinical or healthcare practicum component and the Medical Assistant duties, such as patient intake, vital signs, EHR entry, or phlebotomy, are explicitly listed in your curriculum. Your DSO makes the final determination. If the job description focuses purely on administrative scheduling with no patient-facing clinical work, it may not satisfy the integral curriculum requirement.
Can I work as a Medical Assistant on CPT before completing my clinical coursework?
CPT must be authorized concurrently with or as a direct extension of your academic coursework, not before the related courses begin. Most programs require you to be enrolled in the corresponding clinical module during the CPT period. Starting a Medical Assistant placement before that coursework is active puts your F-1 status at risk, so confirm the timing with your DSO before accepting any offer.
How do I find Medical Assistant employers who understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate for Medical Assistant roles and filter by employers with DOL sponsorship filing history. Larger hospital networks and multi-site urgent care groups tend to have HR teams experienced with F-1 work authorization. Community health centers that partner with nursing or allied health programs also hire CPT students regularly and often have a DSO contact on file.
What documents does an employer need to hire me on CPT?
Your employer needs your CPT-endorsed I-20, your passport, and your visa stamp for the I-9 verification process. The I-20 must list the specific employer name, job title, start date, and whether the authorization is part-time or full-time. Some employers also request a letter from your DSO confirming CPT eligibility. E-Verify employers will run your documents through the federal database within three business days of your start date.
Does CPT for a Medical Assistant role affect my future OPT?
Part-time CPT, under 20 hours per week, does not reduce your OPT eligibility regardless of how many months you accumulate. Full-time CPT of 12 months or more eliminates your OPT entirely. Many Medical Assistant positions are structured as part-time or variable-hour float roles, but you should confirm the expected weekly schedule in writing with HR and review the terms with your DSO before the authorization is issued.
