Does working night or rotating shifts in an ED affect my CPT authorization?
Your CPT authorization is issued for a specific employer, position, and employment period. If your shift type or weekly hours change significantly from what your DSO authorized, you need an updated authorization before working those changed hours. Bring the revised offer terms to your DSO in writing and get a new I-20 endorsement before the change takes effect.
Can I do CPT at a hospital that uses a staffing agency to manage ED nurses?
CPT requires that the employer of record be clearly identified on your authorization. If a staffing agency is the legal employer rather than the hospital, your DSO must authorize the agency, not the hospital. Confirm in writing which entity will issue your W-2 and make that entity's name the one on your CPT paperwork.
How do I find ED employers who already understand F-1 CPT requirements?
Most hospital HR departments encounter CPT infrequently and may confuse it with OPT or request documents that aren't required. Migrate Mate filters employers by their F-1 hiring history so you can target EDs that have successfully onboarded CPT students before, reducing back-and-forth during the offer stage.
Does full-time CPT in the ED affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Twelve months or more of full-time CPT exhausts your post-completion OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT (under 20 hours per week) has no impact. Before accepting a full-time ED position on CPT, confirm with your DSO exactly how many CPT months you've already used across all employers in your program.
What does an ED employer need from me to complete CPT onboarding?
Hospitals typically need your current I-20 with the CPT endorsement on page two, a valid F-1 visa stamp or entry record showing lawful status, your NCLEX-issued RN license for that state, and your Social Security Number if you've been issued one. Some EDs also request your enrollment verification letter from the registrar confirming active student status during the work period.
