CPT Mental Health Therapist Jobs
Mental Health Therapist CPT roles let F-1 students complete supervised clinical hours that most licensure boards require before you can sit for state exams. Your DSO must authorize each placement individually, and the work must tie directly to your counseling, social work, or psychology degree program.

Does CPT work as a Mental Health Therapist count toward state licensure supervised hours?
It depends on the state board and your supervisor's credentials. Most boards accept hours earned during CPT if the site supervisor holds an active license at the required level, such as LCSW or LPC. Confirm with your state licensing board before accepting the placement, since rules vary widely and some boards won't count hours earned before your degree is conferred.
Can I do CPT at a private practice or does it need to be a larger organization?
Private practices qualify for CPT as long as the placement is authorized by your DSO and directly tied to your curriculum. The main practical challenge is that smaller practices may not have an HR process for work authorization paperwork. Ask upfront whether the supervising clinician has experience onboarding international students, since that affects how smoothly your I-20 documentation gets processed.
How do I find Mental Health Therapist employers open to F-1 CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Mental Health Therapist roles by employers with F-1 work authorization history, so you're starting with organizations already familiar with the authorization process. Community mental health centers, university counseling centers, and hospital outpatient programs tend to have established onboarding procedures for CPT students compared to solo private practices.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my placement site changes supervisors mid-term?
Your CPT authorization is tied to the employer and the academic term, not the individual supervisor. A supervisor change doesn't automatically invalidate your authorization, but your program may require updated documentation confirming the new supervisor meets the academic and licensure requirements your school set for the placement. Notify your DSO promptly so they can update your records before any licensing board audit.
Can a Mental Health Therapist CPT role lead to H-1B sponsorship after graduation?
Yes, and CPT placements are a common way to build a sponsor relationship. Mental Health Therapist roles qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards because they require a master's degree in a specific clinical field. The H-1B visa cap lottery applies, so timing matters. If you want to convert your CPT placement into full-time sponsored employment, discuss the H-1B timeline with your employer before your OPT authorization expires.
