Get Access To All JobsTherapist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a therapy internship automatically qualify for CPT?
Not automatically. The placement must be an integral part of your degree program's curriculum, not just any related work experience. Your academic program must require or offer credit for the internship, and your DSO must authorize it in SEVIS before you start. Elective placements that aren't tied to a required course or academic milestone often don't meet CPT eligibility.
Can I work as a therapist on CPT without a clinical license?
Yes, under supervision. CPT placements for therapist roles are typically structured as practicum or internship positions where you provide services under the direct supervision of a licensed clinician. You're not practicing independently, so a full state license isn't required, but your supervisor's credentials and the supervision structure must meet your state's requirements for pre-licensed practice.
How do I find employers who sponsor therapist roles after CPT ends?
Search Migrate Mate for therapist and counseling roles filtered for employers with F-1 or H-1B visa sponsorship history. Hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, and large behavioral health networks are most likely to pursue sponsorship because they have established HR processes and ongoing hiring needs. Smaller private practices rarely have the infrastructure to sponsor.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Yes. If you use 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose all post-completion OPT eligibility. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, doesn't affect OPT. This is a significant planning consideration for therapy students who spend multiple semesters in clinical placements, coordinate with your DSO to track full-time CPT usage carefully throughout your program.
Can I do CPT at a private therapy practice or solo practitioner's office?
You can, but the placement must still meet your school's CPT requirements, and the employer must be able to provide appropriate clinical supervision and complete required documentation. Small practices sometimes lack the administrative capacity to meet university CPT paperwork requirements or state supervision standards. Confirm your school's employer approval process before pursuing placements outside larger institutional settings.
