The Health Literacy & Plain Language Center of Excellence (CoE) helps make clinical research information easier for patients and caregivers to understand. As a co-op, you will support innovative projects that improve the clarity, accessibility, and usability of patient-facing materials across the organization.
In this role, you will work at the intersection of health literacy, user experience, visual communication, and process improvement. You will help evaluate opportunities to incorporate more visual elements into informed consent forms (ICFs), contribute to the development of a patient-friendly visual library, and support efforts to improve information management and reporting capabilities within the CoE and within the ICF team.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
As a Co-op, you will:
- Evaluate opportunities to incorporate visual elements into ICFs to improve understanding and usability.
- Research and develop concepts for patient-friendly graphics, icons, illustrations, tables, and other visual communication approaches.
- Create and pilot a plain language Schedule of Assessments table template for ICFs that is aligned with health literacy and accessibility best practices.
- Benchmark visual communication approaches against external resources, including the Harvard MRCT Image Glossary.
- Support development of a patient-friendly visual library through visual concepts, storyboards, design briefs, and annotated examples.
- Help redesign and reorganize the Informed Consent Management (ICM) SharePoint environment.
- Explore mailbox automation opportunities and enhanced metrics reporting.
- Present recommendations and deliverables to stakeholders.
WHO YOU ARE:
- Passionate about improving accessibility and understandability of information.
- Interest in health literacy, informed consent, patient engagement, and/or health communications.
- Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and Teams.
- Experience with ICF authoring or oversight is a plus.
- Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or other graphic design tools is a plus.
To participate in the Biogen Internship or Co-op Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
- At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college, university or skills program/apprenticeship.

- Degree Levels: Bachelor's or Master's candidates.
- Preferred Majors: Health Communications, Public Health, Information Design, Graphic Design, Communication Studies, Health Informatics, Digital Media.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The base compensation range for this role is: $23.00-$29.00
The actual hourly wage offered will consider the candidate’s current academic level and degree candidacy, inclusive of Associate, Bachelor’s, Master’s, JD, MD, PhD and MBA programs. It will comply with state or local minimum wage requirements specific to the job location.

Does a Patient Care RN role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the clinical nursing role is listed as a required or elective practicum in your enrolled program's curriculum. Your DSO evaluates whether the specific unit, patient population, and duties align with your coursework. General hospital aide or tech roles don't qualify. The position description must reflect the competencies your nursing program is training you to meet.
Can I work full-time as a Patient Care RN on CPT without affecting my OPT?
Part-time CPT, meaning fewer than 20 hours per week, has no effect on your 12-month OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT of 12 months or more eliminates your standard OPT entirely. Most nursing programs structure required clinical rotations as part-time to preserve OPT, but confirm the hours threshold with your DSO before signing a full-time RN contract.
What documents does a hospital HR team need to verify my CPT authorization?
HR will need your current I-20 with the CPT endorsement on page three showing the authorized employer name, position, and exact dates. They'll also need your valid F-1 visa stamp and passport. Some systems require a letter from your DSO confirming the role meets curriculum requirements. Have all three ready before your onboarding appointment to avoid a delayed start date.
How do I find Patient Care RN employers who understand F-1 CPT requirements?

Does CPT authorization transfer if my RN employer reassigns me to a different hospital unit?
No. CPT is authorized for a specific employer, position title, and date range. If your unit changes and the new role carries a different job description or SOC code, your DSO must issue a new I-20 endorsement before you begin working in that capacity. Notify your DSO immediately when any offer details change, including location, unit, or duties.
