Get Access To All JobsClinical Case Manager CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Clinical Case Manager work qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the placement is an integral part of your degree program and your school's curriculum includes a field education, practicum, or internship requirement. Social work, public health, counseling, and human services programs commonly satisfy this. Your DSO reviews the job description against your enrolled courses, not just your major, before issuing authorization on your I-20.
Can I work full-time as a Clinical Case Manager on CPT?
You can work full-time on CPT, but 12 months or more of full-time CPT makes you ineligible for OPT. Most F-1 students in clinical placements use part-time CPT during the semester and shift to full-time during summer or a dedicated practicum term to protect their OPT eligibility for post-graduation employment.
Do Clinical Case Manager employers need to file anything with USCIS for CPT?
No. CPT authorization is issued entirely by your DSO and documented on your I-20. The employer doesn't file with USCIS, pay government fees, or interact with any federal agency on your behalf for CPT. You simply provide your CPT-authorized I-20 to HR before your start date as proof of work authorization.
How do I find Clinical Case Manager employers open to CPT students?
Search Clinical Case Manager roles on Migrate Mate to identify employers with experience hiring international students. Focus your outreach on health systems, federally qualified health centers, and community mental health organizations that operate formal internship or field placement pipelines, these employers are most likely to have HR staff familiar with CPT documentation.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the Clinical Case Manager role changes significantly?
If your duties, employer, work location, or hours change materially after your DSO issued CPT, you need updated authorization before the change takes effect. Working under an outdated I-20, even at the same employer, can constitute unauthorized employment and jeopardize your F-1 status. Return to your DSO with a revised offer letter documenting the changes.
