Get Access To All JobsStaff Pharmacist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Staff Pharmacist role qualify for CPT as an F-1 student?
Yes, if your PharmD program includes a clinical rotation, internship, or practice experience component that a Staff Pharmacist position directly satisfies. Your DSO makes the final determination. Roles in retail, hospital, and specialty pharmacy settings all qualify in most programs, provided the job duties align with your required coursework and the employer can document the training relationship.
Can I work full-time as a Staff Pharmacist on CPT?
Full-time CPT is permitted, but using 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, keep full-time CPT under 12 cumulative months across your program. Part-time CPT of 20 hours or fewer per week does not affect your OPT eligibility regardless of duration.
What documents does the employer need to verify my CPT authorization?
You'll need to present your updated I-20 with the CPT authorization printed on page two, along with your F-1 visa and valid passport. Employers enrolled in E-Verify will also run your information through that system. Some hospital HR departments additionally request your enrollment verification letter, so carry that as well. CPT authorization is employer-specific and tied to your listed start date.
How do I find Staff Pharmacist employers who regularly hire F-1 students on CPT?
Migrate Mate lists Staff Pharmacist openings from employers with documented work-authorization experience, making it easier to identify sites that won't be caught off guard by CPT paperwork. Large pharmacy chains and health systems with structured internship programs are generally the most experienced with F-1 documentation and E-Verify compliance.
Does a Staff Pharmacist CPT position count toward state licensure hours?
It depends on your state board of pharmacy. In most states, hours worked under CPT in a licensed pharmacy setting do count toward the intern hours required for licensure, but the employer must hold an active pharmacy intern preceptor designation. Confirm with your state board and your employer's pharmacist-in-charge before relying on those hours for your license application.
