CPT Clinical Dietitian Jobs
Clinical Dietitian CPT roles place F-1 students in supervised patient-care settings where your nutrition coursework becomes billable clinical practice. Your DSO must authorize each position as an integral curriculum component, and your I-20 must reflect the employer and start date before your first shift.

Does a clinical dietitian role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your program of study is in dietetics, nutrition, or a closely related field and the position provides training that your school treats as an integral part of the curriculum. Your DSO makes the final determination. Roles involving direct patient nutritional assessment, medical nutrition therapy, or supervised clinical counseling typically satisfy this requirement, but a general food service or meal planning role may not.
Can I do CPT at a hospital that hasn't hired F-1 students before?
You can, but the employer needs to understand that your work authorization depends on an updated I-20, not just an offer letter. Walk HR through the CPT process before signing anything. The employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT, so the main hurdle is internal HR comfort with the documentation. Hospitals affiliated with dietetic internship programs are the easiest starting point.
How does CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
If you accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT before graduating, you lose OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't count toward that limit. Many clinical dietitian CPT placements are full-time due to hospital scheduling requirements, so track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully across all authorized positions.
Where can I find clinical dietitian employers who are comfortable with CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you filter for employers with a track record of hiring international students and visa holders, which is a reliable proxy for CPT familiarity. Healthcare systems, VA facilities, and academic medical centers tend to have established processes for work authorization paperwork. Outpatient clinics within university health systems are another strong category because they're already accustomed to student clinical placements.
What does my employer need to provide for my CPT I-20 update?
Your DSO typically requires a formal offer letter on company letterhead that states the employer name, your job title, the work location address, your start and end dates, and whether the role is full-time or part-time. Some schools also require a brief description of how the duties connect to your coursework. Confirm your school's exact checklist before approaching an employer, so you can request the right documentation upfront.
