Radiology Technologist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions

Does working as a Radiology Technologist on CPT affect my OPT eligibility?

Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't affect your OPT eligibility regardless of how long you work. Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more exhausts your full-time OPT entirely, leaving you with only part-time OPT. Track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully with your DSO before accepting a full-time clinical position.

Can I work at multiple imaging facilities simultaneously on one CPT authorization?

No. CPT is authorized per employer, so each clinical site requires its own separate authorization from your DSO. If a staffing agency places you at rotating hospital sites, confirm with your DSO whether the agency itself qualifies as the single authorized employer or whether each facility requires individual CPT paperwork.

What CPT job duties are acceptable for a Radiology Technologist role?

Acceptable CPT duties are those directly tied to your academic program's learning outcomes, such as patient positioning, equipment operation, image acquisition, and radiation safety protocols. Administrative-only roles or positions requiring no imaging work are unlikely to satisfy SEVP's integral curriculum requirement. Your DSO reviews the offer letter against your program's curriculum to make this determination.

How do I find Radiology Technologist employers who are open to CPT students?

Search Migrate Mate to find imaging employers with a documented history of hiring F-1 workers. Radiology departments at teaching hospitals and large health systems tend to have established international student onboarding processes. Targeting employers who already understand F-1 requirements reduces the time spent educating HR about CPT paperwork.

Does my CPT employer need to file anything with USCIS or DOL?

No federal filing is required from your employer for CPT itself. Authorization is entirely school-based, processed through your DSO and recorded in SEVIS. The employer's only obligations are completing Form I-9 and verifying your F-1 status and CPT-endorsed I-20. Future H-1B visa or other nonimmigrant sponsorship would require separate DOL and USCIS filings.
