Get Access To All JobsRadiologic Technologist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do CPT as a radiologic technology student before completing all my clinical hours?
Yes, as long as your school treats the CPT placement as an integral part of your curriculum and your DSO authorizes it on your I-20. Many radiology programs structure CPT rotations to count toward required clinical hours. Confirm with your program director that the specific employer and modality align with your coursework requirements before your DSO issues authorization.
Does part-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not affect your OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Most radiologic technology students use part-time CPT during clinical rotations and preserve their full OPT for post-graduation employment.
What documents does a radiology employer need to onboard me on CPT?
Employers need your CPT-endorsed I-20 showing their name and your authorization dates, your valid passport, and your visa stamp. For Form I-9 verification, CPT students present the I-20 alongside the passport as the work authorization document. Employers participating in E-Verify will run the employment eligibility check electronically, so having your updated I-20 ready on day one prevents delays.
How do I find radiology employers who have hired F-1 CPT students before?
Migrate Mate lets you filter by imaging and radiology roles and surfaces employers with a track record of hiring international students on work authorization. Focusing on those employers shortens your onboarding timeline because their HR teams already understand CPT I-20 documentation, E-Verify enrollment, and the difference between part-time and full-time authorization.
Can I switch from CPT to OPT mid-placement if my graduation is delayed?
CPT and OPT are separate authorizations and can't be swapped mid-placement without a gap in work authorization. If your program extends, your DSO can renew your CPT authorization for a new term as long as the placement remains an integral part of your curriculum. You'd apply for OPT separately once you've met your program's graduation requirements, and the two authorizations can't overlap.
