Get Access To All JobsPatient Service Coordinator CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Patient Service Coordinator role qualify for CPT under an F-1 visa?
Yes, if your academic program in health administration, public health, business, or a related field includes a clinical operations, healthcare management, or practicum requirement. Your DSO must confirm the role integrates directly with your coursework. Positions handling patient intake, insurance verification, scheduling, or EHR coordination typically satisfy that standard at most accredited programs.
How do I find Patient Service Coordinator employers that accept CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Patient Service Coordinator listings filtered to employers with work-authorization sponsorship history. Healthcare employers enrolled in E-Verify and those with prior Labor Condition Application filings are most likely to have existing processes for onboarding F-1 students, which reduces friction when you present your CPT authorization documents.
Can I work full-time as a Patient Service Coordinator on CPT?
Full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week, is permitted but reduces your OPT eligibility. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you forfeit standard OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, under 20 hours per week, does not affect your OPT balance, so many F-1 students in Patient Service Coordinator roles structure their hours accordingly.
What documents does a healthcare employer need to put me on CPT payroll?
You'll need your CPT-authorized I-20 showing the employer's name, start and end dates, and authorization type, plus your valid F-1 visa stamp and I-94 record. The employer will complete Form I-9 using these documents. Some hospital systems also request a letter from your DSO confirming the CPT is curriculum-required, so have that ready before your first day.
Is a Patient Service Coordinator role classified as a specialty occupation for future H-1B sponsorship?
Generally no. The role's SOC classification under O*NET typically requires only a high school diploma or some college, which falls short of the bachelor's-degree-in-a-specific-field standard USCIS applies to specialty occupations. Some employers reframe the role as healthcare administration analyst or care coordination specialist to support an H-1B visa petition, but that requires a position redesign, not just a title change.
