St. Mary's College of Maryland is accepting applications for the tenure track position of Assistant Professor and Internship Coordinator in its newly approved Masters of Arts in Counseling and Clinical Psychology (MACCP) program, beginning August 2027. The MACCP program is the second Masters program at SMCM (following the successful Master of Teaching program). The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $79,000 based on level of experience; startup costs are negotiable; benefits information is available online.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The standard teaching load is 12 credits (usually, the equivalent of 3 courses) per semester. The Internship Coordinator will be in charge of preparing for internship placements (which is built into the teaching load). Teaching responsibilities will include courses in the Master of Arts in Counseling and Clinical Psychology program (e.g., Psychopathology and Diagnosis, Multicultural Counseling, Lifespan Development, Group Counseling, Psychological Testing, Family Systems in Practice), as well as the possibility of undergraduate courses in your area of specialization to provide cross-program collaboration with the Psychology major.
At SMCM, we seek faculty whose pedagogical practice involves culturally responsive teaching practices that promote belonging and inclusion. New faculty are paired with mentors to support your growth as a teacher-scholar. In addition, we offer start-up funding to support your research, especially encouraging projects that relate to the training of psychotherapy practitioners. Over time, professors take on roles in services to the program and College to support the College's mission; first-year faculty are exempt from college-wide committee work.

Do psychology CPT jobs need to match my specific concentration?
Yes. Your DSO will require that the placement is directly tied to your program's curriculum, not just broadly related to psychology. A clinical psychology student placed in a pure research role, or vice versa, may not meet the integral-to-curriculum standard. Can I do CPT at a private therapy practice or solo-practitioner office?
You can, but smaller private practices often lack an HR infrastructure familiar with F-1 CPT documentation requirements. You'll need to provide the employer with a CPT authorization letter from your DSO and ensure the placement agreement meets your school's field-site requirements. Many small practices are willing once they understand no filing is required on their end.
How do I find psychology employers who regularly hire CPT students?
University counseling centers, VA hospitals, community mental health centers, and academic research labs are the most consistent sources of CPT placements for psychology students. Does CPT work experience count toward supervised hours for licensure?
It depends on your state's psychology licensing board. Some boards accept pre-doctoral supervised hours earned during CPT placements if they meet the required supervisor-to-supervisee ratio and documentation standards. Confirm with your state board before starting the placement, and ask the employer to provide formal supervision documentation you can submit with a future licensure application.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my employer changes my role mid-placement?
A material change in job duties, location, or hours can invalidate your existing CPT authorization. Your updated I-20 is tied to the specific employer and role your DSO approved. If the employer reassigns you to a different position or site, return to your DSO immediately to get a new CPT authorization issued before continuing to work.
