Get Access To All JobsClinical Psychologist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Clinical Psychologist internship qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the internship is a required part of your degree program and your DSO authorizes it in SEVIS before you begin. APA-accredited doctoral programs typically require an internship or practicum for graduation, which satisfies the 'integral to curriculum' standard SEVP uses to evaluate CPT eligibility. Your offer letter and program documentation should explicitly connect the position to a specific course or training requirement.
Can I do CPT as a Clinical Psychologist at a private practice or group therapy setting?
You can, but the placement must still meet CPT requirements: it must be required by your program, authorized by your DSO, and integrated into your curriculum via course credit or a formal training agreement. Private practices that aren't part of a hospital system or university training consortium may lack formal supervision documentation, so confirm the site has a licensed supervising psychologist and a written training plan before your DSO submits the CPT authorization.
How do I find Clinical Psychologist employers who sponsor F-1 students for CPT and future H-1B sponsorship?
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with a track record of sponsoring international psychology professionals. Hospitals, community mental health centers, and university counseling services are the most common CPT sites for doctoral students and are also the employer types most familiar with H-1B visa sponsorship after graduation. Filtering by employers with LCA filing history helps you prioritize sites that already understand the process.
Does full-time CPT as a Clinical Psychologist affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. SEVP rules state that 12 months or more of full-time CPT authorization eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, including STEM OPT. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not count against your OPT. If your doctoral program requires a full-time internship year, plan your CPT and OPT strategy with your DSO well before your program end date to avoid losing post-graduation work authorization.
What O*NET classification applies to Clinical Psychologist CPT positions?
Clinical Psychologist positions fall under O*NET SOC code 19-3031.02. This classification confirms the role requires a doctoral degree in psychology and substantial supervised clinical experience, which supports the specialty occupation argument for H-1B petitions after graduation. Reviewing the O*NET profile for this code also helps you frame your CPT job duties accurately on your resume and in future visa paperwork.
