Get Access To All JobsOR Tech CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does OR Tech work qualify as CPT for a surgical technology program?
Yes, if your enrolled program includes a clinical practicum or externship requirement and the OR Tech role fulfills that requirement in the curriculum. Your DSO confirms the connection between the job duties and your coursework. A general health sciences degree may not qualify if the program doesn't specifically list surgical or perioperative clinical training as a required component.
Can I do CPT at an ambulatory surgery center instead of a hospital?
Yes. Ambulatory surgery centers and outpatient surgical facilities count the same as hospital OR departments for CPT purposes, provided your school approves the site. The key requirement is that the setting gives you the surgical assisting or scrub tech duties your program requires, not just administrative or patient transport work.
How do I find OR Tech employers who are set up to hire CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for OR Tech openings and filter for employers with documented work authorization history. Many surgical facilities have hired F-1 students on CPT before and have HR processes in place. Facilities with no prior experience often delay onboarding because they don't know how to verify your I-20 authorization.
Does CPT for an OR Tech role count against my OPT eligibility?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't affect your OPT eligibility at all. Full-time CPT, 20 or more hours per week, used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Most structured surgical rotations are scheduled as part-time or semester-length, so verify your weekly hours with your DSO before accepting full-time placement terms.
What documents does an OR Tech employer need to complete my I-9 on CPT?
You'll present your valid passport, your F-1 visa, your current I-20 with CPT authorization listed for that specific employer, and your I-94 arrival record. The employer completes Section 2 of the I-9 using these documents. If your CPT end date falls before your rotation ends, you need a CPT extension on your I-20 before that date, not after.
