Get Access To All JobsCertified Registered Nurse Practitioner CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does CPT work authorization cover all CRNP specialties, or only certain practice areas?
CPT authorization covers any CRNP specialty as long as the placement is an integral and required part of your degree curriculum. Your DSO evaluates the curriculum requirement, not the clinical specialty. Whether you're placed in family practice, acute care, or psychiatric mental health NP settings, the eligibility standard is the same: the work must be in your program plan before it starts.
Can I work full-time as a CRNP on CPT, or is part-time required?
Full-time CPT is permitted, but using 12 months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined by USCIS as 20 hours or fewer per week, has no impact on OPT. Most NP programs structure clinical placements as part-time to preserve students' post-graduation work authorization options.
How do I find health systems that regularly hire F-1 CRNP students on CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with a track record of hiring F-1 students in advanced practice nursing roles. Health systems that have processed CPT authorization letters before are far less likely to reject your offer over work authorization paperwork, which is the most common obstacle for F-1 students in clinical hiring.
Does my state NP license affect my CPT authorization?
Your DSO authorizes CPT based on your curriculum requirements, not your licensure status. However, you must hold a valid NP license for the state where you'll practice before your first clinical shift. Unlicensed practice, even under CPT, violates both state law and your terms of employment, so licensure should be secured in parallel with your DSO authorization.
What happens if my CRNP CPT placement ends before my semester does?
If your clinical hours are completed early but your I-20 CPT authorization runs through the semester end date, you must stop working on the date your placement officially concludes, not on the I-20 end date. Continuing past the placement end date without a new DSO-authorized position on your I-20 puts your F-1 status at risk. Coordinate with your DSO immediately if the placement timeline changes.
