Responsibilities
- Conduct psychosocial and behavioral health assessments for patients with chronic pain.
- Provide evidence-based individual and group psychotherapy.
- Assist patients in developing pain coping, self-management, and behavioral activation skills.
- Collaborate with pain medicine providers, physical therapists, and other interdisciplinary team members to support patient goals.
- Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning and case consultation.
- Educate patients regarding the biopsychosocial model of pain and evidence-based pain management strategies.
- Support functional restoration, resilience, and engagement in meaningful life activities.
- Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation.
Qualifications
Education:
- Master of Social Work, Master in Professional Counseling, Master of Family Therapy degree from a nationally accredited institution, fulfilling the requirements for licensure in the state of Oregon and/or Washington.
Experience
- Required: Minimum two years of clinical treatment experience with patients and working as part of a multidisciplinary care team.
- Preferred: Experience working with adults experiencing chronic pain and complex medical conditions
- Preferred: Experience treating medical and psychological trauma
- Preferred: Experience practicing within integrated or interdisciplinary healthcare settings

It depends on your state's licensing board. Many states accept supervised clinical hours earned under CPT toward LCSW or LPC licensure requirements, but the supervisor must hold the appropriate license and the placement must be in an approved clinical setting. Confirm the specific hour-counting rules with your state board before starting, since requirements vary significantly across jurisdictions.
Can I do CPT at a private therapy practice instead of a hospital or community mental health center?
Yes, private practices are eligible CPT sites as long as the placement meets your school's curriculum integration requirements and your DSO approves it. The practice must provide adequate clinical supervision from a licensed therapist. Smaller private practices are less likely to have prior experience with F-1 students, so expect to walk HR or the practice owner through your I-20 and authorization letter.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my employer changes my role or caseload mid-placement?
A material change in job duties, supervision structure, or work location can affect whether the placement still qualifies as CPT under your program's curriculum requirements. Notify your DSO immediately if your role changes significantly. Your DSO may need to issue a new I-20 reflecting the updated placement details to keep your authorization current and compliant.
How do I find Behavioral Health Therapist employers experienced with F-1 CPT students?

Does part-time CPT as a Behavioral Health Therapist still count toward the 12-month full-time limit?
No. Only full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week, counts against the 12-month threshold that eliminates OPT eligibility. Part-time CPT placements, even across multiple semesters, do not reduce your OPT entitlement regardless of total duration. If your program allows structured part-time rotations, coordinating with your DSO to keep placements under 20 hours preserves your post-graduation OPT options.
