Does a Behavioral Health Technician role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if you're enrolled in a psychology, social work, counseling, or related behavioral sciences program. Your DSO evaluates whether the BHT duties, such as implementing treatment plans, monitoring patient behavior, and documenting progress notes, directly connect to your curriculum. Programs that include a supervised clinical practicum component almost always have a clear path to CPT approval for this role.
Can I work as a BHT at multiple facilities on the same CPT authorization?
No. CPT is employer-specific. Each placement requires a separate CPT authorization on a new I-20, and each must be individually approved by your DSO before you start. If you rotate between facilities as part of a structured program, your school may treat it as one authorization if the placements are formally part of the same academic component.
How do I find behavioral health employers who will work with my CPT I-20?
Search on Migrate Mate, which filters for employers familiar with F-1 CPT requirements. Residential treatment centers, community mental health clinics, and hospital behavioral health units are the most common CPT-compatible settings. Facilities affiliated with university systems or academic medical centers typically have established onboarding processes for F-1 students on work authorization.
What documents does my BHT employer need to put me on payroll with CPT?
You'll need your CPT-endorsed I-20 showing the employer name and authorized dates, your passport, your F-1 visa stamp, and your I-94 arrival record. The employer completes Section 2 of Form I-9 using these documents. CPT students do not receive an EAD card, so the I-20 is the primary work authorization document HR will rely on.
Does part-time versus full-time CPT as a BHT affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS rules. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not affect OPT regardless of how many terms you use it. If you're considering a full-time BHT placement lasting a full academic year, discuss the OPT impact with your DSO before accepting the offer.
