Get Access To All JobsSchool Nurse CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a School Nurse role qualify as an integral part of an F-1 curriculum?
It depends on your degree program. A School Nurse placement qualifies for CPT only if your program formally requires or awards credit for clinical work in school or community health settings. Your DSO and academic advisor must both confirm the connection in writing before authorization is issued. Nursing programs with a community health or public health clinical component are the most common fit.
Can I do CPT as a School Nurse if I'm still completing my RN licensure requirements?
Some states allow student nurses or graduate nurses working under supervision to fill school health roles in a limited capacity, but most school districts require a full unrestricted RN license before onboarding. Check your state's board of nursing rules on graduate nurse permits and confirm the district's HR policy before your DSO submits CPT authorization, since a mismatch can delay your start date.
How do I find school districts that have hired F-1 CPT students before?
Searching by employer hiring history saves time and avoids districts whose HR teams aren't familiar with CPT paperwork. Migrate Mate shows which employers have a documented history of hiring F-1 students, so you can focus on districts that already know how to process your authorization documents rather than educating HR from scratch.
What documents does a school district's HR department typically need for CPT onboarding?
You'll need your valid F-1 visa stamp, your updated I-20 showing CPT authorization with the district listed as the employer, your passport, and your EAD if one was issued for your specific CPT. Some districts also request a letter from your DSO confirming the placement is curriculum-required. Prepare all of these before your first day since I-9 verification must happen within three business days of starting work.
Does CPT as a School Nurse count toward the 12-month full-time CPT limit that affects OPT?
Yes. Any full-time CPT, regardless of role, counts toward the 12-month cumulative limit. If you exceed 12 months of full-time CPT across all placements during your degree, you lose OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count toward that limit. A typical semester-long school nursing rotation is often structured as part-time to preserve OPT.
