CPT Medical Coder Jobs
Medical Coder CPT roles sit at the intersection of clinical knowledge and healthcare administration, making them a natural fit for students in health information management, healthcare administration, or coding certificate programs. Your DSO must confirm the position is integral to your curriculum before you can start, so bring a detailed job description to that conversation.

Get Access To All JobsMedical Coder CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Medical Coder role qualify as CPT for health information management students?
Yes, if your program includes coursework in medical terminology, ICD or CPT coding systems, or health records management. Your DSO evaluates whether the specific job duties, not just the job title, connect to your academic curriculum. Bring the full job description to your DSO meeting and ask which course or practicum the authorization will be tied to.
Can I do CPT as a Medical Coder in a fully remote position?
CPT authorization covers the work itself, not the physical location, so remote Medical Coder roles can qualify. Your school still needs to confirm the work is integral to your curriculum. Some schools have internal policies requiring a physical site or supervisor contact, so verify with your DSO before accepting a remote offer from a billing company or telehealth platform.
How do I find Medical Coder employers who are familiar with CPT onboarding?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point. It surfaces Medical Coder listings from employers with documented work authorization filing history, which signals familiarity with international student onboarding. Larger hospital systems and national medical billing companies tend to have established HR processes for CPT students, while small independent practices may need more guidance from you on what CPT requires.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the employer changes my job duties after I start?
CPT is tied to the specific duties your DSO reviewed and authorized. If your employer shifts you from inpatient coding to a general administrative role, your authorization may no longer cover the new work. Contact your DSO immediately if your responsibilities change significantly. Continuing work outside your authorized scope can affect your F-1 status and future OPT eligibility.
Does full-time CPT as a Medical Coder affect my OPT eligibility later?
Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS rules. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not affect OPT regardless of duration. Many Medical Coder CPT students structure their authorization as part-time or limit full-time semesters to preserve post-graduation OPT for H-1B visa cap-gap purposes.
