Get Access To All JobsClinical Counselor CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Clinical Counselor practicum qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your counseling degree program requires a supervised clinical practicum or internship as a graduation requirement. CPT must be an integral part of your established curriculum, and your DSO must authorize the specific employer and position before you begin any work. Part-time CPT, which is under 20 hours per week, doesn't affect your OPT eligibility, but full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your post-completion OPT entirely.
Can I do CPT at a private therapy practice instead of a large agency?
You can, but private practices present a higher documentation burden. Your DSO will need proof that the site provides qualified clinical supervision meeting your state licensure board's requirements, and many private practices aren't familiar with I-20 amendment paperwork. Larger mental health agencies, hospital systems, and university counseling centers are more accustomed to hosting F-1 students and can complete employer verification steps faster.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my practicum site changes mid-semester?
You must stop working immediately and notify your DSO before transferring to a new site. CPT is authorized for a specific employer and location, not for a general counseling role. Your DSO will need to issue an amended I-20 listing the new employer's details before you can begin hours at the new site. Starting at the new site without an updated I-20 is an unauthorized employment violation.
How do I find Clinical Counselor employers who are open to F-1 CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to identify counseling organizations with documented visa filing history, which signals familiarity with international work authorization processes. Beyond that, university career centers often maintain lists of approved clinical training sites that have previously hosted F-1 students. Look specifically for agencies that list 'CSWE-accredited internship' or 'APA-approved training site' in their job postings, as those programs already have structured onboarding for supervised clinical positions.
Does CPT as a Clinical Counselor count toward state licensure hours?
It depends entirely on your state's licensure board. Many states, including California and New York, count supervised practicum hours completed under a licensed clinical supervisor toward LPC, LCSW, or LMFT licensure requirements, regardless of your visa status. Confirm with your state's licensing board before accepting a CPT position that the supervision structure and supervisor credentials meet their specific standards, because not all site supervisors qualify even if the hours are valid for CPT purposes.
