Get Access To All JobsSurgical First Assistant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a surgical first assistant role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, provided the role is an integral part of your enrolled program's curriculum and your DSO approves it. Surgical technology, perioperative nursing, and allied health programs most commonly authorize this. If your degree is in an unrelated field, your DSO will need to establish a direct curricular link before issuing CPT on your I-20.
Can I work on CPT at a traveling surgical first assistant contract?
You can, but each 13-week travel contract at a new facility requires a fresh CPT authorization update from your DSO because the employer of record and work location change. Notify your DSO before each new assignment starts, and confirm the staffing agency rather than the hospital is listed correctly as your employer on the I-20.
How do I find surgical first assistant employers who understand CPT?
Migrate Mate lists employers with prior work authorization filing history, which filters for facilities already familiar with onboarding international students. Hospital systems and large ambulatory surgery networks are generally better equipped than independent surgery centers, which often lack HR infrastructure to process CPT documentation correctly.
Does CPT for a surgical role affect my future OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS rules. If your surgical CPT is part-time (under 20 hours per week), it doesn't count against OPT. Plan your CPT usage carefully with your DSO if you intend to pursue OPT-based H-1B visa cap registration after graduation.
What documentation does a hospital HR department need to onboard a CPT student?
HR will need your current I-20 with the CPT authorization page listing the employer name, work site address, and employment dates. They'll also need your valid F-1 visa stamp, passport, and I-94 admission record. Some hospital systems also require a DSO verification letter on school letterhead confirming the CPT is curriculum-integrated.
